Xiaomi unveils sustainable development strategy powered by core technology innovations

[output_post_excerpt]

At COP29, the year’s prominent climate summit held under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Xiaomi Corporation introduced a new sustainable development strategy, with foundational technologies at its core. Renowned for its consumer electronics and smart manufacturing, Xiaomi showcased its latest advancements in carbon management within its “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem, emphasising the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility through technological innovation.

Speaking at the China Pavilion, Alain Lam Sai-wai, Xiaomi’s Vice President and CFO, and Chairman of Airstar Digital Technology, outlined Xiaomi’s ambitions for sustainability. Lam stressed Xiaomi’s goal to make artificial intelligence (AI) accessible while driving sustainable practices across its ecosystem. He explained that Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” strategy aims to deliver a smart, sustainable lifestyle by leveraging its core technologies and advancements in AI, allowing users to benefit from solutions that integrate operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.

Lam shared, “Through smart manufacturing, AI innovation, and new retail models in our smart ecosystem, Xiaomi has not only enhanced its operational efficiencies and economies of scale in production but also enhanced the integration and efficiency of its supply chain, effectively optimising resource utilisation and energy consumption ratios.” He highlighted that these developments are a central part of Xiaomi’s efforts to support eco-friendly manufacturing while maintaining a high level of user experience.

AI powering practical green innovation

Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem is built to enable efficient, low-carbon lifestyles through a seamless blend of AI and core technologies. At the heart of this ecosystem is the Xiaomi HyperMind smart platform, which optimises power usage across devices like air conditioners and refrigerators, adjusting them to maintain low energy consumption. This smart platform allows users to enjoy a comfortable home environment while minimising environmental impact, striking a balance between convenience and conscious energy use.

Xiaomi’s commitment to sustainability also extends to its manufacturing, where the company has achieved high levels of automation across critical production areas. The Xiaomi EV Factory utilises its self-developed “Hyper Intelligent Manufacturing Platform” (Hyper IMP), streamlining the entire manufacturing process from production management to adjustments that conserve resources. This automation reduces energy and material waste, improving efficiency at every stage of production.

Xiaomi’s SU7 Series, an electric vehicle within this ecosystem, recently received the “Low-Carbon Leader” award from the China Automotive Technology & Research Centre. The SU7 model is engineered with a minimal drag design, holding the world’s lowest drag coefficient for mass-produced saloons, and supports 800V super-fast charging technology to improve charging efficiency. Through these enhancements, Xiaomi’s vehicles achieve precise energy management and can adjust driving modes to minimise energy waste, aligning with the company’s commitment to a low-carbon future.

Introducing a carbon management standard for the ecosystem

In a major step towards standard-setting, Xiaomi introduced an organisation standard for the “Construction of Carbon Management System for ‘Human x Car x Home’ Smart Ecosystem”. This framework, introduced in October, is the first of its kind to guide diverse enterprises within Xiaomi’s ecosystem in managing carbon emissions efficiently.

The primary goal of this standard is to support enterprises in Xiaomi’s ecosystem with effective carbon management. A secondary aim is to encourage innovation in carbon management using AI, enabling businesses to implement carbon reduction across their value chains. By setting this standard, Xiaomi seeks to advance sustainable practices not only within its ecosystem but across the industry.

A vision for technology-led sustainability

Xiaomi’s commitment to sustainable development is grounded in its focus on long-term investment in core technologies that aim to benefit society. This strategy aligns with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values, which Xiaomi regards as essential to its success. Beyond financial gains, Xiaomi’s future relies on a harmonious balance with environmental and social objectives.

To achieve these aims, Xiaomi has pledged to reach carbon neutrality in its operations by improving energy efficiency, adopting clean energy practices, and innovating further in smart manufacturing. These initiatives are designed to limit Xiaomi’s carbon footprint while supporting its growth. Xiaomi also prioritises sustainability across its value chain, providing customers with environmentally conscious products and services. As it develops its sustainable technologies, Xiaomi remains dedicated to leading a low-carbon future for customers and the wider society.
