Appleโs latest iOS update is bringing big improvements for robot vacuum users. With the release of iOS 18.4 on Monday, you can now control your robot vacuum directly through the Apple Home app, thanks to support for the Matter protocol. This update means you can add your Robovac to automation and scenes, making integrating it into your smart home setup easier. In response, companies like Roborock, iRobot, and Ecovacs have begun rolling out firmware updates to ensure their devices are fully compatible.
Roborock leads the way with Matter updates
Roborock has confirmed that several high-end robot vacuum models will soon receive a firmware update to enhance their Matter support. According to the company, the update will improve connectivity across multiple smart home platforms, including Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. The Roborock models to receive this update include the S8 MaxV Ultra, Saros Z70, Saros 10, Saros 10R, Qrevo Curv, Qrevo Edge, and Qrevo Master.
These models will be updated between April 1 and April 10, allowing you to control them using Appleโs Home app on devices like the iPhone, Apple Watch, HomePod, and iPad. Roborock has also announced that additional models, such as the S8 Max Ultra and Qrevo Slim, will receive Matter support in future updates over the coming weeks and months.
iRobot and Ecovacs join the movement
iRobot has confirmed that its Roomba Combo 10 Max robot vacuum and Auto Wash Dock, launched in August 2023, will be its first device to support the Matter protocol. With this update, you can start, stop, and schedule cleanings for specific rooms using the Apple Home app or voice commands via Siri.
Ecovacs is also bringing Matter 1.4 support to several popular robot vacuum models. The Deebot X2, X2 Combo, T50, T50 Max, and X8 will begin receiving firmware updates. According to Ecovacsโ Associate Brand Marketing Director, Michelle Jones, these updates will be rolled out in phases, ensuring a smooth transition for users.
What can you do with Apple Home and Matter?
Apple first announced support for robot vacuums in Apple Home at WWDC 2024. With the iOS 18 update, you can control your Robovacโs power, switch between vacuuming and mopping modes, and specify which rooms to cleanโall from the Apple Home app. However, some advanced features, like mapping and configuring no-go zones, wonโt be supported through Matter. Youโll still need to use the manufacturerโs app for those functions.
The Matter protocol aims to make smart home devices work seamlessly across different platforms. With this latest update, Apple is making it easier to manage your robot vacuum, whether you use Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa. As more manufacturers roll out Matter support, controlling your smart home devices will become even more convenient.
