The Animated Flies app reminds you to empty your Mac’s trash

Discover Bananabin, the Mac app that uses animated flies to remind you to empty your trash folder, making digital clutter management fun.

It’s a common frustration when your computerโ€™s trash folder starts to overflow. Some people leave it until their computer warns them about storage issues, while others empty it daily. If youโ€™re like most people, you probably fall somewhere in between. But now there’s an app that can help: Bananabin, designed to make managing your trash folder both fun and efficient.

How Bananabin works

Bananabin is a clever app that uses animated flies to alert you when your trash folder exceeds a certain size. When the data in your trash folder surpasses a set threshold, animated flies start buzzing around your screen. You can shoo them away with your mouse, turning the task of managing your trash folder into a fun and entertaining experience.

Bananabin offers three different settings for when the flies appear: Janitor Mode (10MB), The Recycler (1GB), and Garbage Hoarder (10GB). These settings allow you to customise the app to your specific needs, whether you prefer to keep a close eye on your trash or only want to be alerted when it’s getting out of hand.

Compatibility and limitations

Leon Schrijvers, one of Bananabinโ€™s developers, said they are still fixing bugs. For example, the animated flies wonโ€™t appear if you keep your trash in an iCloud Trash bin or on an external drive. Additionally, the app only works on macOS Sonoma, but they are looking into adding support for macOS Ventura.

Permissions and installation

To function correctly, Bananabin requires access to all discs and permissions to access them. Schrijvers explained the necessity of these permissions:

โ€œFor Bananabin, we need accessibility permission to read out the position of the bin in the dock. As for the full disc access, we need this to calculate the disc space the bin takes up. When this space is larger than the configured threshold, then the flies will appear.โ€

If you’re comfortable granting these permissions, you can download the app from Bananabinโ€™s website. To receive the download link, youโ€™ll need to provide your email address.

In conclusion, Bananabin offers a unique and entertaining approach to managing your computerโ€™s trash folder. With its animated flies alerting you when your trash exceeds a certain size, it ensures that you stay on top of your digital clutter. Give it a try and experience a fun way to keep your trash folder under control.
