Switch 2 to be unveiled before April 2025, Nintendo confirms

Nintendo promises to unveil the successor to the Nintendo Switch, known as Switch 2, before April 2025, amid slowing current model sales.

has confirmed that the long-awaited successor to the Nintendo Switch, tentatively known as Switch 2, will be unveiled before April 2025. This announcement was made alongside the release of the company’s results for the end of the year.

Exciting news for gaming enthusiasts

Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, revealed that the next-generation console is slated for announcement within the current fiscal year, which concludes on March 31, 2025. This timeline is consistent with the speculated Q1 2025 launch of the new console.

“We will be announcing the successor to the Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year,” Furukawa stated. He added, “It has been over nine years since the Nintendo Switch was first announced in March 2015.” Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming console, Furukawa clarified that the Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for June will focus solely on the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024 and will not discuss the new Switch 2.

The anticipation of the new console comes at a time when sales of the current Nintendo Switch have begun to slow. Nintendo projects a decrease in sales to 13.5 million units this year, down from 15.7 million units sold in the previous fiscal year. Additionally, the company anticipates a 39 per cent drop in net profits and a 19 per cent decline in revenue for the upcoming year.

Despite these challenges, the Switch remains popular, with sales of the latest OLED model increasing by 1.1 per cent year over year. Nintendo reported a robust user base, with 123 million annual players recorded between April 2023 and March 2024, marking the highest level of engagement since the platform’s launch.

Continued support for the Switch platform

Nintendo remains committed to the current generation of Switch consoles, setting ambitious goals to expand its presence in households. “We aim to not only place a system in every home but also multiple systems, or even one for every individual,” the company stated in its forecast. This strategy reflects Nintendo’s confidence in the enduring appeal of the Switch platform as it prepares for the next phase of its console offerings.
