Sennheiser introduces the HD 550: A new entry-level open-back headphone

Sennheiser launches the HD 550, an entry-level open-back headphone with improved frequency response and premium build quality.

Sennheiser has expanded its range of entry-level open-back headphones with the release of the HD 550. This latest model shares several features with the HD 505 Copper Edition, which was launched last month but brings some subtle improvements to the table.

Improved audio performance with wider frequency response

The HD 550 has 38mm dynamic drivers, the same size as those in the HD 505 Copper Edition. However, it offers a slightly broader frequency response of 6Hzโ€”39.5kHz compared to its predecessor’s 12Hzโ€”38.5kHz range. This means it can produce deeper bass and capture more detail in the higher frequencies.

Additionally, the new model has a higher impedance of 150 Ohms, up from the 120 Ohms seen in the HD 505. This suggests that the HD 550 might require a more powerful amplifier to reach its full potential but could also deliver a more refined listening experience.

Built-in a factory known for legendary headphones

One of the most notable aspects of the HD 550 is its origin. The drivers are manufactured in Sennheiserโ€™s Tullamore factory, the same facility responsible for producing iconic headphones such as the HD 650 and HD 800 S. This connection could indicate a strong commitment to quality, even for an entry-level model.

The HD 550 maintains an open-back design, which is known for providing a more natural and spacious sound. While it closely resembles the HD 505 in appearance, one key difference is the filter used to cover the driver. It remains to be seen how this change will affect the overall sound signature, but it is an intriguing modification that could impact the listening experience.

Availability and pricing

The Sennheiser HD 550 is priced at US$449 and will be available in Singapore from April 14. It can be purchased through Sennheiserโ€™s official stores on Lazada and Shopee and the Sennheiser Online Store.
