Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries is set to construct what may become the world’s largest AI-focused data centre in Jamnagar, India, with a staggering capacity of three gigawatts, according to a Bloomberg report. This would significantly surpass the current largest facility, Microsoft’s 600-megawatt site in Virginia. The ambitious project costs between US$20 billion and US$30 billion.
Reliance’s AI Data Centre to Run on Renewable Energy
Reliance, India’s most valuable company, plans to power the data centre with renewable energy from a nearby green energy complex, utilising solar, wind, and hydrogen power. This sustainable approach aligns with the company’s commitment to green energy solutions.
Nvidia Partnership to Boost India’s AI Infrastructure
To support the facility’s AI capabilities, Reliance is collaborating with Nvidia to procure its chips to build advanced infrastructure for AI applications. Their partnership, announced in October, highlights a strategic move to position India as a global hub for AI development.
The Jamnagar project follows Reliance’s history of securing over US$25 billion in investments in 2020 from major players like Meta, Google, and KKR to fuel its telecom and retail ventures. This bold initiative arrives alongside other significant AI infrastructure investments globally, such as OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle’s US$500 billion pledge through the Stargate Project in the US.
