Qualcomm expands AI research with MovianAI acquisition

Qualcomm has acquired Vietnamese AI research firm MovianAI to boost its AI development in smartphones, PCs, and software-defined vehicles.

Qualcomm has officially acquired MovianAI, the generative AI research division of Vietnamese tech giant Vingroup. This move is expected to strengthen Qualcommโ€™s advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in developing AI-driven solutions for its chipset technology.

In a statement, Qualcomm highlighted that acquiring MovianAI would enhance its efforts in โ€œfundamental AI research.โ€ These advancements will be integrated into Qualcommโ€™s chip designs, which power devices such as smartphones, personal computers, and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The company sees AI as a key element in shaping the future of these technologies, making this acquisition a strategic step forward.

MovianAIโ€™s expertise joins Qualcommโ€™s global AI push

VinAIโ€™s founder and CEO, Dr. Hung Bui, has officially joined Qualcomm as part of the acquisition. Dr Hung, who has an extensive background in artificial intelligence, was involved in Googleโ€™s DeepMind project before leading VinAI, another AI-focused subsidiary under Vingroup. His expertise will contribute significantly to Qualcommโ€™s AI research and development.

MovianAI has made a strong impact in the AI field, and its research is now set to play a critical role in Qualcommโ€™s innovations. Qualcomm has been actively expanding its AI capabilities to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving tech industry. By bringing MovianAI under its umbrella, Qualcomm aims to push the boundaries of AI in its hardware and software solutions.

Financial terms remain undisclosed

While Qualcomm has confirmed the acquisition, the deal’s financial details remain undisclosed. However, according to VNExpress, a Vietnamese online newspaper, MovianAI has a charter capital of nearly US$9 million. It is unclear how much Qualcomm paid for the acquisition or the specific financial stakes involved in the agreement.

The move aligns with Qualcommโ€™s broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities and integrate them into its product lineup. As artificial intelligence continues to drive innovation across multiple industries, Qualcommโ€™s investment in AI research positions it as a key player in the evolving tech landscape.
