PlayStation and AMD collaborate to revolutionise gaming with AI

Sony and AMD partner to bring AI-powered gaming innovations, enhancing graphics and gameplay on PlayStation, PCs, and cloud platforms.

Sony and AMD are teaming up in an exciting venture to bring cutting-edge AI-powered technology to gaming. The partnership aims to enhance graphics and gameplay on PlayStation consoles and various platforms, including PCs and cloud-based gaming systems.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, revealed this deeper collaboration on September 18. The initiative, codenamed Project Amethyst, focuses on developing machine learning (ML) solutions to elevate gaming experiences.

What Project Amethyst brings to gaming

The partnership builds on Sony and AMDโ€™s long-standing relationship. AMD already powers the PS5 and PS5 Pro GPUs using its RDNA 2 architecture. The PS5 Pro introduced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a feature that enhances image quality and frame rates, providing a glimpse into what ML can achieve.

Project Amethyst sets out two key goals:

  1. An optimised architecture for machine learning focuses on lightweight convolutional neural networks (CNNs) tailored for game graphics, offering faster and more efficient processing.
  2. Advanced CNNs for improved graphics: The collaboration aims to create a high-quality collection of network architectures and training strategies, resulting in richer visuals and more robust features like ray tracing and path tracing.

These innovations could significantly elevate the visual fidelity of future games, making virtual worlds more immersive and gameplay smoother.

Beyond PlayStation

One of Project Amethyst’s standout features is its inclusivity. Unlike proprietary technologies that restrict innovations to specific devices, this initiative aims to democratise machine learning.

Cerny emphasised that the goal is to make ML tools widely accessible. “Through this technology collaboration, weโ€™re looking to support broad work and machine learning across various devices, including PCs, consoles, and cloud systems,” he shared during a 37-minute presentation.

Sony and AMDโ€™s vision stretches beyond gaming graphics. They aim to provide game developers with the tools to integrate AI-driven solutions into gameplay mechanics, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in interactive experiences.

A glimpse into the future

Despite the promise of these developments, gamers will need to wait before seeing their impact. Cerny cautioned against expecting immediate hardware updates. “Creating a console is roughly a four-year journey,” he noted, hinting that Project Amethystโ€™s innovations might debut with the PlayStation 6 or similar next-gen devices.

For now, Project Amethyst represents a long-term commitment to innovation. As Sony and AMD continue their multi-year collaboration, the gaming world can anticipate more frequent updates, showcasing the progress of this ambitious venture.

With its focus on advanced AI integration and accessibility, this project is poised to reshape gaming technology for years.
