Oppo unveils new AI centre and brings generative AI to Reno series phones

Oppo announces its new AI Centre and the introduction of advanced AI features in its upcoming Reno11 series.

Oppo, a renowned Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has recently announced a significant leap in the field of artificial intelligence with the establishment of the Oppo AI Centre. This new research and development hub, nestled in the Oppo AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China, symbolises Oppo’s ambition to spearhead AI advancements in its devices, particularly smartphones.

A new era of AI in smartphones

At the core of Oppo’s AI vision are four defining characteristics that they believe will shape the future of AI on smartphones. Firstly, efficiently utilising computing resources is critical for meeting the computational demands of generative AI in the AI era. This involves leveraging AI to enhance device performance and user experience.

Secondly, Oppo emphasises the importance of timely awareness of the natural world through sensors. This means understanding the complex information of users and their environment, thereby making smartphones more intuitive and responsive.

Thirdly, possessing powerful self-learning capabilities is a crucial aspect. This involves the phone adapting and learning from user interactions, continuously improving its functionality and user experience.

Lastly, Oppo focuses on the ability of smartphones to have multimodal content generation abilities. This includes visual content, text, and other forms of media, providing users with continuous inspiration and knowledge support.

Oppo’s definition of AI in smartphones is not just a theoretical framework but a practical roadmap that they are actively pursuing. This includes integrating their Large Language Model (LLM), AndesGPT, which boasts 180 billion parameters. First introduced in the Oppo Find X7 series phones, AndesGPT enhances dialogue, personalisation, and cloud-device collaboration, marking a significant milestone in Oppo’s AI journey.

The Reno11 series: Pioneering AI features

In its pursuit to make AI more accessible and beneficial for everyday users, Oppo is set to introduce these AI features in its upcoming Reno11 series. This update, expected globally in Q2 2024, will bring an array of AI features like Oppo’s AI Eraser and more to the Reno11 series phones. This move indicates Oppo’s commitment to developing AI technology and ensuring its practical application in consumer products.

Looking ahead

Oppo’s establishment of the AI Centre and the integration of advanced AI features in its Reno11 series underscore the company’s dedication to being at the forefront of the AI revolution in the smartphone industry. By focusing on practical and user-centric AI applications, Oppo is enhancing its product offerings and shaping the future of how we interact with our devices.
