OPPO and Ericsson establish global cooperation for 5G advancement

OPPO has signed a global cooperation agreement with Ericsson to advance 5G technology through patent licensing and innovation, enhancing global telecommunications standards.

OPPO, a leading global technology firm, has entered into a pivotal global cooperation agreement with Ericsson, focusing on enhancing 5G technology worldwide. This extensive partnership covers a range of collaborative efforts, including global patent cross-licensing, technical cooperation, and market expansion.

Strengthening ties through intellectual property and innovation

The global patent cross-license is central to the agreement, encompassing standard-essential patents related to crucial cellular communication technologies such as 5G. This arrangement highlights the mutual respect for intellectual property between the two companies and solidifies a foundation for future joint ventures.

Feng Ying, Chief Intellectual Property Officer of OPPO, stated, “We are pleased to announce that we have reached a global cooperation agreement with Ericsson. The global patent cross license between two companies covers cellular standard-essential patents including 5G. This agreement reflects the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property and lays a solid foundation for our collaboration.”

OPPO’s legacy and commitment to research and development

OPPO has been committed to research and development since its founding nearly 20 years ago, continuously investing in innovations that translate into valuable intellectual property and enhanced user experiences. As of 30 June 2024, OPPO has filed over 103,000 patent applications globally, receiving more than 57,000 patents, with 91% of these being utility patents. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reports that OPPO was ranked ninth worldwide in patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in 2023, marking its fifth consecutive year in the global top ten.

As a significant holder of 5G SEPs and a leader in smart device innovation, OPPO plays a dual role as both an innovator and implementer of technology standards. The company has filed over 6,200 families of patent applications for 5G communication standards across more than 40 countries and regions. It has declared over 3,700 5G families to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute and submitted more than 12,000 standard documents to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project.

Reports from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and IPlytics in October 2023 rank OPPO among the top globally in terms of 5G SEP strength, underscoring its commitment to advancing global technology standards.
