Nvidia releases a script to streamline GeForce Now setup on the Steam Deck

Nvidia launches a script to streamline GeForce Now setup on Steam Deck, automating installation and enhancing the cloud gaming experience.

Nvidia has introduced a new script designed to facilitate the integration of its GeForce Now cloud gaming service with Valveโ€™s Steam Deck. This move aims to enhance the gaming experience by simplifying the setup process for users.

The new script automatically installs Google Chrome on the Steam Deck and adjusts settings to enable gamepad functionality. It further simplifies the process by adding a GeForce Now shortcut directly into the userโ€™s Steam library. While this script handles the bulk of the setup through the SteamOS terminal app, some manual adjustments are still necessary to optimise the gaming experience.

Once GeForce Now is launched, users will need to manually adjust the controller settings. By pressing the Steam menu button and navigating to controller settings, gamers must change the Current Button Layout to โ€œGamepad with Mouse Trackpad.โ€ This adjustment allows the trackpad on the Steam Deck to function as a mouse within the GeForce Now interface.

Nvidia has also integrated a streaming overlay for GeForce Now, accessible by long-pressing the Steam Deckโ€™s menu button. This feature is intended to improve navigation within the cloud gaming service. However, it’s important to note that some games, like Genshin Impact, require gamepad inputs within their settings menus. In these cases, players will need to use the trackpad to manoeuvre through options, and the escape key can be activated by pressing the Steam button along with the left D-pad.

For those who prefer using Microsoft Edge instead of Chrome on their SteamOS, Nvidia provides manual instructions applicable to both browsers. This inclusion ensures that users have the flexibility to choose their preferred web browser while setting up GeForce Now.

As Nvidia takes steps to enhance cloud gaming accessibility on the Steam Deck, there is growing anticipation around whether Microsoft will release a similar script for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Such a development would further expand the Steam Deck’s capabilities, making it a more versatile platform for cloud gaming enthusiasts.
