Nintendo postpones next-generation console launch to 2025

Nintendo's next-gen console, the Switch 2, is now set for an early 2025 launch, focusing on a robust first-party game lineup.

In a recent development that will be a talking point among gaming enthusiasts, Nintendo has announced postponing its next-generation console, unofficially known as “Switch 2”, to the first quarter of 2025. This delay extends the interval since the launch of the original Nintendo Switch to nearly eight years, a significant wait for fans eagerly anticipating the new platform.

Shift in release timeline

The first indications of this schedule change were reported by Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, who cited multiple sources in his coverage. This news has been further validated by reports from well-known gaming publications such as Video Games Chronicle (VGC) and Eurogamer. These sources concur that Nintendo’s original plan to release the new console in the second half of 2024 has been revised to the first quarter of 2025.

As suggested by VGC, one potential reason for this postponement is Nintendo’s desire to launch the new console with a substantial selection of first-party games. This strategy aligns with Nintendo’s historical emphasis on providing quality gaming experiences and could ensure a more impactful launch for the new platform.

Focus on the original Switch and upcoming games

Amidst these updates, Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, has conveyed to stakeholders that the original Switch will remain a primary focus for the company in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. He also highlighted plans for a smooth transition to the next-generation console, reflecting the company’s thoughtful approach to new product introductions.

Despite being several years into its lifecycle, the original Nintendo Switch continues to perform exceptionally well in the market, with sales surpassing 139 million units globally. This enduring success underscores the console’s popularity and Nintendo’s strong position in the gaming industry.

Nintendo’s release schedule remains packed with exciting titles to maintain engagement among its fans. Recently launched “Mario vs. Donkey Kong” has already garnered attention, and other anticipated releases like “Princess Peach: Showtime!”, “Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD” and “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” are on the horizon. Additionally, “Metroid Prime 4” remains a highly anticipated title, though its release window is yet to be confirmed.

In conclusion, while the delay of Nintendo’s next-gen console might extend the anticipation for fans, the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality gaming experiences remains evident. The rich lineup of upcoming games for the current Switch ensures that there is much for Nintendo enthusiasts to look forward to in the meantime.
