Nintendo Museum opens to first-day visitors with charming details

The Nintendo Museum opens in Uji, Kyoto, and is full of charming details like wobbly Toad heads, Game Boy lockers, and the unique Hatena Burger experience.

The Nintendo Museum in Uji City, Kyoto, opened its doors to excited fans on October 2. Those lucky enough to win tickets through the museum’s lottery system flocked to social media to share their experience, with many highlighting the charming and whimsical details that make this new attraction truly special.

Beyond the main exhibits showcasing Nintendo’s rich history of games, visitors quickly pointed out the smaller, delightful touches scattered throughout the museum. A standout feature that captured the hearts of many was a display featuring Toad characters from the Mario series. These figures, known for their mushroom-shaped heads, are interactive and wobble when touched, bringing a playful element to the space.

The whimsical details didn’t stop there. Visitors raved about a vending machine themed after Kirby, the beloved pink puffball from Nintendo’s games. This Kirby-themed machine serves drinks but also adds a touch of fun to an everyday experience. Another charming feature was the umbrella holders shaped like Game Boys, available in different colours. These holders allow guests to store umbrellas while enjoying the museum’s attractions safely. The lockers were designed to look like oversized Game Boy cartridges, and they became a hit, adding a nostalgic nod to Nintendo’s iconic past.

Unique dining at Hatena Burger

The museum also offers a unique dining experience at Hatena Burger, named after the famous question mark blocks from the Mario games. Visitors to the museum raved about the fun twist on ordering here. The restaurant allows you to build your burger by choosing each layer, offering a customisable meal that’s as playful and delicious as Adding to the experience, guests can download a cute, animated version of their customised burger after their visit, a quirky memento that captures Nintendo’s playful spirit.

This innovative approach to dining reflects the museum’s broader theme of making even the most functional aspects of the visit engaging and interactive. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, recently mentioned that the museum is focused on communicating through its products, and it’s clear that this philosophy has been applied to every corner of the museum, even the dining areas.

Reserve your visit

Opened on October 2, 2024, the Nintendo Museum is located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, and promises to be a must-visit for fans of the beloved gaming company. However, tickets must be reserved in advance, and the museum’s lottery system is proving to be a popular challenge for eager visitors. Reservations can be made through the museum’s website, with options in English and Japanese.

As the museum continues to welcome guests, more charming details will emerge, solidifying Nintendo’s place as a gaming giant and a creator of joyfully immersive experiences. If you’re planning a visit to Japan, this delightful museum should be on your list, whether you’re a long-time Nintendo fan or new to the magic.
