Moment’s SuperCage brings pro-level power and versatility to smartphone filmmaking

Moment’s SuperCage, now available on Kickstarter, turns your smartphone into a pro filmmaking rig with a USB-C hub, multiple ports, and expandability.

Moment, known for its innovative smartphone accessories, has just unveiled its latest product, the SuperCage—a game-changer for mobile filmmakers. Designed to transform your smartphone into a professional video camera, the SuperCage offers improved functionality, greater flexibility, and a seamless filming experience. While smartphone cages aren’t a new concept, Moment’s SuperCage takes things to the next level by integrating a USB-C hub, which means fewer accessories are required, making your filming setup more streamlined.

A boost for mobile filmmaking

If you’re into mobile filmmaking, you’ve likely used accessories to enhance your smartphone’s capabilities. While Moment already offers a more affordable cage option, the SuperCage stands out as the first in their range to include a built-in USB-C hub. This hub allows smartphones with USB-C ports, such as the iPhone 15 and 16, to record directly to an external storage device. For filmmakers, this unlocks the ability to record in ProRes 4K at 60 frames per second, provided that the external storage is fast enough.

Another useful feature of the SuperCage is its 100W passthrough port, which enables you to charge your phone while recording. This is particularly handy when filming for extended periods, ensuring that your device doesn’t run out of power mid-shoot.

Moment has made a name for itself with its impressive range of smartphone accessories, including high-quality lenses and MagSafe tripod mounts. Now, with the SuperCage, they’re offering a product that gives filmmakers even more control over their setup, allowing for a more professional outcome.

Secure and versatile

The SuperCage is built around an expanding clamp, which holds your smartphone securely in place within a durable aluminium frame. What sets the SuperCage apart is its expandability—you can add handles, mounts, and other accessories, turning your phone into a full-fledged professional rig. If you’re familiar with NATO rails, you’ll appreciate that the SuperCage supports them on its top and sides, making it compatible with a wide variety of filmmaking gear.

Whether you’re using a tripod or other equipment with Arca rails, the bottom of the SuperCage can be attached with ease. This ensures that your setup remains stable, allowing for smoother shots and better footage overall.

In addition to the USB-C hub, the SuperCage also comes with a 4K HDMI port, SD card slot, as well as ports for both microphones and headphones. These extra ports give you the freedom to connect additional devices and accessories, such as external monitors, allowing you to preview your footage on a bigger screen in real-time.

Kickstarter campaign and availability

The SuperCage is currently available for preorder on Kickstarter at US$199. Although crowdfunding campaigns come with risks, Moment has a strong track record of delivering products through this platform. In fact, the company has already successfully delivered 10 products to backers, earning a level of trust among its supporters.

If you decide to back the SuperCage, expect deliveries to start in December 2024. This accessory promises to enhance your mobile filmmaking experience, offering more control, power, and flexibility than ever before. Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker or just starting out, the SuperCage could be a valuable addition to your toolkit.
