Microsoft’s Copilot receives voice and vision in the latest update

Microsoft updates Copilot with voice and vision features, improving user interaction and privacy. It is available on iOS, Android, and Windows.

Microsoft has introduced several new features to its AI assistant, Copilot, to provide a more user-friendly and intuitive experience. In a recent blog post, the tech giant announced updates that will allow Copilot to interact in more human-like ways, offering information, encouragement, feedback, and advice. These improvements include adding voice and vision capabilities, making Copilot more versatile and natural to engage with.

The changes, as described by Microsoft, promise to deliver faster, more fluent answers in a warm, distinct tone. Below are some key features introduced in the latest Copilot update:

Copilot’s voice adds a personal touch

One of the most significant changes is the addition of Copilot Voice, which allows users to interact with their AI assistant through speech. This feature makes communicating with Copilot feel more personal, like talking to a companion. Copilot Voice is designed to understand you and help you decide whether to ask a quick question or share your thoughts after a long day.

Four different voice options allow you to customise your AI experience. This feature will initially be available in English-speaking regions, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Microsoft plans to expand this functionality to other languages and regions soon.

Copilot vision makes AI smarter

Another major addition is Copilot Vision, which enables the assistant to “see” what you see. This feature allows Copilot to interpret text and images on your screen and provide relevant feedback or suggestions. For instance, if you’re browsing furniture for a new home, Copilot Vision can assist you by suggesting colour schemes, giving advice on different pieces, and even helping you arrange the furniture in your space.

Copilot Vision is set to roll out as part of Copilot Labs, which gives select users early access to experimental features. Initially, it will be available to a limited number of Copilot Pro subscribers in the United States, with plans to extend access in the near future.

Microsoft has also integrated Copilot directly into the Microsoft Edge browser. By typing @copilot in the address bar, you can quickly access Copilot’s abilities, such as answering questions, summarising web pages, or rewriting sentences. This feature enhances the browsing experience, making it easier to navigate the web without leaving your current task.

According to Statcounter, this move could also bolster the popularity of Microsoft Edge, which currently holds a 5.24% market share as of August 2024. Microsoft hopes to encourage more users to adopt its browser by providing seamless access to Copilot.

New features boost functionality

Alongside the major updates, several smaller yet impactful features have been introduced. Think Deeper allows Copilot to handle complex queries with step-by-step answers, perfect for situations where you must compare options or make a thoughtful decision.

Another new feature, Copilot Daily, starts your day with a personalised update on news and weather, all delivered in your chosen voice. It can also offer reminders of upcoming tasks. Microsoft has partnered with reputable news sources such as Reuters, USA TODAY Network, and the Financial Times to ensure Copilot Daily provides accurate and reliable information.

Lastly, Personalised Discover and Copilot Labs allow users to test experimental features and receive personalised recommendations based on their interactions with other Microsoft services. These options make it easier for users to explore Copilot’s capabilities and improve their daily workflow.

Microsoft has also highlighted the importance of security and privacy with these updates. Sessions involving Copilot Vision are opt-in and temporary, meaning none of the data used during these interactions is saved or used for further training. Once your session ends, the information is permanently deleted, ensuring users a high level of privacy.

The new and improved Copilot is gradually being rolled out across iOS, Android, and Windows platforms, marking a significant step forward in AI-powered assistance. With its growing list of features, Copilot is positioning itself as a more engaging and practical tool for everyday tasks.
