Microsoft unveils Gears of War: E-Day

Microsoft reveals Gears of War E-Day at Summer Game Fest, an origin story set 14 years before the first game, developed by The Coalition.

Get ready to embark on another thrilling journey in the Gears of War universe. At the Xbox Games Showcase during the Summer Game Fest, Microsoft unveiled the highly anticipated Gears of War E-Day, the latest installment in the sci-fi shooter series. Developed by The Coalition, the Xbox studio dedicated to the Gears franchise, this new game is set to deliver an exhilarating origin story. While the release date is yet to be announced, one thing is certain: this game is being built on the cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5, promising a gaming experience like no other.

A nod to the classic

Prepare to be transported back to the iconic ‘Mad World’ commercial from the original Gears of War. E-Day, set 14 years before the first game, tells the gripping tale of the first locust emergence on the planet Sera. And who better to guide you through this epic journey than the legendary Marcus Fenix? This game serves as an origin story for the beloved character, bringing back memories of the early days of the Gears series.

Expanding the franchise

This release marks the first new game in the series since Gears 5 in 2019. Microsoft has ambitious plans to expand the Gears of War franchise into a multimedia empire, akin to Halo. While these plans have not fully materialised yet, some notable developments have occurred. In 2020, a strategy spinoff called Gears Tactics was released. Additionally, Netflix has announced plans for both a live-action film and an animated series set in the Gears universe. Unfortunately, the Funko Pop-styled mobile game, while initially popular, was unable to sustain its player base and was shut down in 2021. However, this setback has not deterred Microsoft from its commitment to expanding the franchise.
