Microsoft adds long-awaited features to Outlook for Windows

Microsoft will add 30 new features to Outlook for Windows, including PST file support, email retention control, and AI-powered Copilot tools.

In 2023, you may have heard that Microsoft announced the end of its Mail, Calendar, and People apps on Windows. These well-known apps, which have served you and many others for years, are set to be replaced by a single appโ€”Outlook for Windows. While the apps are still available for download from the Microsoft Store, they will only remain accessible until December 31, 2024.

After this date, Outlook will be the only option on Windows. This change has stirred mixed feelings among users, many of whom have been frustrated by the newer app’s lack of features compared to the older apps. However, Microsoft is now making significant improvements to the Outlook app.

A host of new features are coming soon

According to a report by Windows Latest, Outlook for Windows will receive a major update later this year. Microsoft plans to roll out around 30 new features to address many of the issues users have raised.

One of the most significant updates includes support for PST files. If old emails are saved in PST format, you can access them easily within the new Outlook app. Additionally, you will gain better control over how long your emails are retained, allowing you to manage your inbox more effectively.

Another handy feature is the ability to pin important folders to the top of your app, ensuring that the folders you use most frequently are always within easy reach. This will help you stay organised and improve your overall email management experience.

AI-powered tools for a smarter inbox

To modernise your email experience further, Microsoft is also introducing AI-powered tools to Outlook. Copilot, one of these tools, will assist you in drafting emails, offering suggestions, and even helping you rewrite portions of your messages before you hit send. This feature is designed to help you communicate more clearly and effectively, especially if you often need to send important or sensitive emails.

These improvements show that Microsoft is committed to enhancing the Outlook experience, making it more versatile and user-friendly. If you want to see a complete list of all the upcoming features, you can visit the official Microsoft 365 site. These updates will likely make your transition to the new Outlook smoother and more enjoyable.

Preparing for the transition

As the deadline for the old apps approaches, itโ€™s a good idea to start familiarising yourself with the new Outlook features now. The transition might seem daunting at first, but with the added functionalities, youโ€™ll likely find that the new app can meet all your email, calendar, and contact needs more efficiently than ever before.

While change can be challenging, these updates show that Microsoft is committed to making Outlook for Windows the best tool for your communication needs. With these long-awaited features, the new Outlook is set to become a powerful and reliable app that could redefine how you manage your emails and calendar in the coming years.
