Meta’s software glitch disrupts Quest headsets for weeks

Meta’s software glitch has disrupted Quest 2, 3, and 3S headsets. The company is working on a fix and offering out-of-warranty repairs.

Meta’s Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S virtual reality headsets have been facing a frustrating issue, leaving users unable to operate their devices. A “software update issue,” as noted on Meta’s official Quest support site, has been causing the headsets to malfunction. While the company states that most users can now use their devices as expected, it admits the issue hasn’t been fully resolved. Meta is actively working on a fix for everyone affected.

Out-of-warranty support offers relief

This may be a silver lining for users who own Quest 2 and 3 headsets outside their warranty period. Many frustrated customers reported that Meta had previously refused to repair or replace their devices, citing expired warranties. However, recent updates suggest that Meta is reconsidering its stance.

Some users on Reddit claim they’ve received emails confirming free out-of-warranty service to address the issue. This aligns with an update shared by a community manager on Meta’s support forums, indicating that customer support now has new instructions to help affected users.

The change in approach has sparked hope for users who had initially felt let down. Meta’s recent communication suggests it prioritises the problem more seriously as reports of malfunctioning devices surface.

The problem is acknowledged, but details remain unclear

Meta first acknowledged the problem on December 6, stating that some Quest 3S headsets were affected. However, the announcement did not mention the older Quest 2 and Quest 3 models or the specific software version linked to the glitch.

The lack of clarity left many users speculating about the broader impact of the issue. It wasn’t until this week that Meta expanded its acknowledgement, confirming that the problem extends beyond the Quest 3S. The company has yet to fully explain what caused the glitch or when a complete solution will be rolled out.

Recent updates add new features amid lingering issues

On December 9, Meta announced the release of its latest update, Meta Quest v71. This update introduced features such as an improved virtual desktop display connection and keyboard passthrough support in virtual environments. While these updates bring exciting new functionality, they arrive in the shadow of a technical problem that continues to frustrate a portion of Meta’s user base.

For now, affected users are advised to keep checking Meta’s support site for updates and instructions on resolving the issue. Meta’s efforts to extend support to out-of-warranty users may indicate a step in the right direction. Still, the company must quickly restore trust among its loyal VR community.
