Meta Connect 2024: What’s coming for VR and AR technology

Meta Connect 2024 promises new VR and AR technology, AI tools, and exciting software updates as Meta pushes toward the future of the metaverse.

Metaโ€™s annual Connect developers conference is just around the corner, promising new virtual and augmented reality developments. This year’s event is highly anticipated, especially with the potential reveal of exciting new VR and AR hardware, updates on smart glasses, and a deeper dive into Meta’s AI innovations, including the Llama large language model. Additionally, you might witness the unveiling of groundbreaking developer tools that focus on generative AI, which could shape the future of AR filters and experiences.

Metaโ€™s vision for the future of the metaverse is expected to take centre stage. Major updates to Horizon Worlds, its virtual reality platform, may also feature heavily in the event, providing insight into Metaโ€™s plans to continue building its alternative reality environment.

But everyone is buzzing about the possibility of seeing the successor to the Meta Quest 3, the next generation of Meta’s popular VR headsets. Letโ€™s take a closer look at what else you can expect.

When is Meta Connect 2024?

Meta Connect 2024 kicks off on Wednesday, September 25, and wraps up on Thursday, September 26. The event begins with a keynote speech from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT on the opening day. Following this, a Developer keynote will occur at 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT. The full schedule, which includes various sessions and workshops, can be found on the official Meta Connect website.

Whether you’re attending online or in virtual reality, Meta offers several ways to watch the conference. You can stream it live via the Meta Connect website, or, if you’re a Meta Quest user, immerse yourself in the keynote by watching it in Horizon Worlds. Developers can also access live sessions deep into AI, virtual reality, and mixed-reality topics.

Meta holds a unique position in the VR market, and its Quest headsets have brought virtual reality to the mainstream. The Meta Quest 3, while popular, launched at a higher price point than its predecessor, the Quest 2, which eventually dropped to US$200. Rumours suggest that Meta may reveal a more affordable version of the Quest 3, possibly called the Quest “3S,” which could retail for as low as US$299.99. If true, this would be a significant move to make VR more accessible to a broader audience.

The company is reportedly working on a new Quest 4, slated for release in 2026, and a high-end 2027 model codenamed โ€œLa Jolla.โ€ While itโ€™s uncertain if these models will be showcased at this year’s Connect, they highlight Metaโ€™s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of VR. However, itโ€™s worth noting that plans for โ€œLa Jollaโ€ may have been delayed, particularly in light of Appleโ€™s struggles with its Vision Pro headset, which carries a hefty $3,500 price tag.

In addition to VR headsets, Metaโ€™s partnership with Ray-Ban is another area to watch. Their sleek smart glasses, which donโ€™t yet have AR functionality, are expected to get an upgrade. With Metaโ€™s AI capabilities integrated into these glasses, you can control them through voice commands. Seeing what enhancements are in store for this innovative product line will be exciting.

Metaโ€™s focus on mixed reality

Meta has also been working on new mixed-reality glasses, internally codenamed โ€œOrion.โ€ Unlike Snapโ€™s AR Spectacles, which are still in the developer-only stage and have received mixed reviews, the โ€œOrionโ€ glasses are expected to be much more refined and consumer-friendly. Though thereโ€™s no guarantee they will make a full debut at Meta Connect 2024, itโ€™s possible weโ€™ll get a sneak peek.

On the software front, Meta is expected to announce new experiences and games for its Quest platform. While the company recently made headlines for shutting down Ready at Dawn, the studio behind the popular game Echo VR, it has since released an app allowing users to play console games on the Quest headset via HDMI. These developments suggest Meta is exploring new ways to integrate gaming into its VR ecosystem, though the future of more immersive, 3D game experiences remains unclear.

Whatever the specifics, Meta Connect 2024 promises to showcase the company’s dedication to pushing the limits of whatโ€™s possible in virtual reality, mixed reality, and AI.
