MediaTek boosts AI performance with new chipsets at Computex 2024

MediaTek will showcase new chipsets at Computex 2024 to enhance AI performance in consumer electronics and data centres.

On June 1, MediaTek marked a significant milestone, its 27th anniversary, at Computex 2024. This was not just a celebration, but a platform to unveil a bold new strategy. The companyโ€™s focus on enhancing AI capabilities within its chipsets is a testament to its enduring commitment to advancing AI technology across a wide range of applications.

Embracing AI technology

MediaTekโ€™s first major announcement at Computex 2024 was its integration of Arm Neoverse Compute Subsystems (Arm Neoverse CSS) into its system-on-chip designs. This move is intended to optimise performance for AI applications in data centres, infrastructure systems, and telecommunications. By incorporating Arm Neoverse CSS, MediaTek ensures superior performance per watt for AI workloads. Armโ€™s advanced chip design also provides the necessary architecture for leading computing, graphics, and AI performance.

New chipsets for smart devices

MediaTek also unveiled new AI-ready chipsets for various consumer electronics. The Pentonic 800 system-on-chip is designed for 4K smart TVs and displays, while the Kompanio 838 targets Chromebooks.

The Pentonic 800, a game-changer in the world of smart TVs and displays, features 50% faster AI processing and 60% lower bandwidth usage. Its onboard Neural Processing Unit (NPU) supports a host of AI-enhanced features, including AI-Super Resolution 3.0, AI-Contrast 2.0, AI-Picture Quality Scene Recognition 2.0+, and AI-Picture Quality Object Recognition 2.5+. It also supports modern video codecs such as HEVC, AV1, AVS3 High Profile, and VVC (H.266), opening up a world of possibilities for enhanced viewing experiences.

The Kompanio 838, on the other hand, is engineered to deliver high performance while maximising battery efficiency for Chromebooks. It supports up to LPDDR4X RAM and includes MediaTekโ€™s proprietary NPU 650 for AI tasks. The Imagiq 7 image-sensing processor supports dual cameras and enhances low-light capture capabilities. The chip also supports Wi-Fi 6E networks with a 2×2 antenna setup, ensuring robust connectivity.

Recent developments

Continuing its streak of innovation, MediaTek introduced a half-step upgrade to its flagship Dimensity 9300+ chipset. This upgraded chip made its debut in the Vivo X100s smartphone, a clear demonstration of MediaTekโ€™s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of mobile technology. This development instills confidence in the companyโ€™s ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions in the future.

These announcements are not just about new chipsets but also about MediaTekโ€™s dedication to pushing the boundaries of AI technology. By enhancing the AI capabilities of their chipsets, MediaTek is set to revolutionise user experiences across a diverse range of devices. From smart TVs and displays to Chromebooks and smartphones, MediaTekโ€™s advancements promise improved performance and efficiency.
