Major updates in Apple’s AirPods lineup leaked, promising significant changes

Apple is planning major updates for its AirPods lineup, with two distinct fourth-gen models slated for 2024 and a redesign for the AirPods Pro expected in 2025.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to revamp its AirPods product line in the coming years. The tech giant aims to discontinue the second and third-generation AirPods when new models are introduced next autumn. The less-than-impressive sales of the third-generation AirPods have been attributed to the continued availability of the older, cheaper second-generation model.

Two new sets of fourth-gen AirPods coming in 2024

To avoid the same sales dilemma, Apple has plans to release two versions of the fourth-generation AirPods in 2024. These new models will be priced similarly to the current lineup but will have distinct features to set them apart. Gurman reports that the design will be a fusion of the existing third-generation AirPods and the Pro model, featuring shorter stems.

Advanced features for the higher-end model

Among the two new sets, the more premium version will inherit features from the AirPods Pro, such as noise cancellation and integrated speakers in the charging case to enhance the ‘Find My’ function. Interestingly, neither of the new models is expected to come with replaceable silicone ear tips. They’ll likely continue the one-size-fits-most, open-air design that standard AirPods have always offered. This means the AirPods Pro will still have the edge in terms of noise cancellation and sound quality.

USB-C and other updates on the horizon

Apple is also in the process of transitioning all its AirPods to USB-C connectivity. A minor update for the AirPods Max is also expected next year. This update will feature a USB-C port and new colours, but only a few other changes are anticipated. Gurman suggests they support lossless audio when paired with the Vision Pro.

Looking further ahead, a redesign for the AirPods Pro is expected in 2025, although specifics are not yet available.
