LG teams up with Rakuten TV to launch new VOD service in Europe

LG Electronics partners with Rakuten TV to launch LG Movies & TV, offering premium content and streamlined payments across LG TVs in Europe.

LG Electronics has partnered with Rakuten TV to launch its new video-on-demand (VOD) service, LG Movies & TV. This service is now available across LG TVs in the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Designed to offer a seamless entertainment experience, the app allows users to rent, purchase, and watch films, from recent blockbusters to timeless classics. No subscription is required, making it an accessible option for many across these European markets.

This partnership with Rakuten TV, one of Europeโ€™s leading streaming platforms, gives LG TV users access to a catalogue of over 6,000 titles. Whether you’re in the mood for the latest Hollywood hits or favourite classics, LG Movies & TV has something for everyone. LG has tailored its selection of films to suit the tastes of its diverse European audience.

Among the highlights available on the platform are the upcoming action-packed prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the highly anticipated summer hit The Fall Guy. Additionally, Dune: Part Two continues to engage viewers with its epic story and striking visuals. These titles showcase the range of content available, from action and adventure to sci-fi and drama, making it a perfect fit for those seeking a cinematic experience at home.

Expanding availability across more models

The service is initially available on selected 2022 LG TV models, but the company has plans to expand it across all of its 2022, 2023, and 2024 TV models by the end of this year. LG Movies & TV can be easily accessed via the Home Screen on compatible models, ensuring a user-friendly experience right from the start.

In conjunction with the launch of the new VOD service, LG is rolling out its webOS Pay system, an intuitive payment solution designed for convenience. This system, integrated with a userโ€™s LG account, enables one-click transactions using the LG Magic Remote. The setup process is simple, requiring only a single PIN for all future purchases.

The introduction of webOS Pay means that users no longer need to go through the hassle of scanning QR codes or manually entering URLs to complete a transaction. This streamlined payment method makes renting or buying films from LG Movies & TV even more convenient, offering a smooth experience that enhances at-home viewing.

A future-ready payment system

Beyond LG Movies & TV, webOS Pay is set to be a unified payment system that will work across multiple services in the future. Once a user sets up their account, webOS Pay will connect all linked services, providing easy access to payment history, content status, and subscriptions, all from their LG TV account.

Chris Jo, senior vice president of platform business at LG Home Entertainment Company, commented on the companyโ€™s dedication to improving user experiences. โ€œLG remains dedicated to presenting diverse content and services for an unmatched user experience with our cutting-edge webOS smart TV platform. By strategically investing over KRW 1 trillion (US$740 million) by 2027, we aim to significantly enhance webOS and broaden its range of offerings.โ€

This collaboration strengthens LG’s ongoing efforts to offer the best home entertainment options, backed by the growing ecosystem of global content partners. โ€œLG will continue to collaborate with more than 4,000 global content partners to provide a varied and user-centric home entertainment experience for customers around the world,โ€ Jo added.

Rakuten TV’s Chief Product Officer, Sidharth Jayant, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We are excited to expand our strategic partnership with LG. This collaboration underscores Rakuten TV’s commitment to being at the forefront of premium entertainment, bringing the best of global cinema into the homes of our European viewers.”

This new VOD service, combined with LGโ€™s commitment to innovation and user satisfaction, is expected to enhance the overall viewing experience for LG TV users across Europe.
