iOS 18.3 arrives with AI notification summary tweaks

iOS 18.3 changes AI notification summaries, including new settings and improved features for Apple devices.

Apple has just released iOS 18.3, which brings a set of updates and adjustments to how notifications are summarised on iPhones. One significant change involves temporarily disabling notification summaries for news and entertainment apps.

This update comes after the BBC pointed out an issue where the notification summary feature incorrectly summarised one of its headlines. Apple took this complaint seriously, and it decided to disable the summaries for these apps. If you have opted into using this feature, Apple will notify you once it’s available again.

Apple Intelligence now enabled by default

In addition to these changes, iOS 18.3 brings a few other updates. This update applies to Apple devices that support Apple Intelligence, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and, later, iPads with the Apple Silicon M1 chip or newer and the latest version of the iPad mini. It also includes devices running macOS 15.3, which is being rolled out alongside iOS 18.3.

New features on iPhone and Mac

The update also includes several new features. One notable addition allows you to use Visual Intelligence to easily add an event to your Calendar app directly from a poster or flyer. The update also improves the ability to identify plants and animals.

On Macs, the macOS 15.3 update includes support for Genmoji and similar changes to notification summaries.

iOS 18.3 will now display notification summaries in italicised text, making it easier for you to distinguish them from regular notifications. Additionally, new settings have been added, enabling you to manage these summaries directly from your lock screen.

To get the iOS 18.3 update on your device, head to Settings > General > Software Update.
