Instagram to replace square profile grids with rectangles

Instagram is switching to rectangle grids for profiles, moving away from squares. Plus, a new Reels feature shows videos that friends like.

Instagram is making a significant change to the way your profile grid looks. Instead of the traditional square tiles, your photos and videos will now display as rectangles. This update, confirmed by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, is set to roll out โ€œover the weekend,โ€ according to an Instagram Story he posted on Friday.

Why the change to rectangles?

Mosseri explained that while many users appreciate the classic square format, Instagramโ€™s evolution has shifted towards vertical content. โ€œSquare photos are part of Instagramโ€™s heritage,โ€ Mosseri admitted, โ€œbut most uploads now, whether photos or videos are vertical in orientation. Itโ€™s a bummer to overly crop them.โ€

He acknowledged that the adjustment might feel inconvenient initially. However, he views this as a temporary discomfort. โ€œOver time, I believe people will appreciate seeing more of their photos and videos as originally intended, without aggressive cropping,โ€ he added. This change aims to let your content shine fully on your profile grid.

What does this mean for users?

The shift to rectangles aligns with Instagramโ€™s focus on enhancing user experience. It reflects the platformโ€™s commitment to showcasing users’ content without losing its original format. Mosseri likened the change to similar updates tested in the past, such as when Instagram trialled this feature with a limited group of users last August.

While some users might miss the familiar square tiles, the update is part of Instagramโ€™s efforts to adapt to the growing popularity of vertical media. Mosseri reassured users that this transition is a step towards better visual presentation, making profiles more engaging and modern.

New Reels feature announced

In addition to the profile grid changes, Instagram has introduced another feature to enhance social interaction. You will now find a dedicated section in your Reels feed that shows videos liked by your friends. This addition makes it easier to discover and engage with content that resonates within your social circle.

As Instagram continues to evolve, these updates reflect its focus on keeping the platform fresh, user-friendly, and aligned with current content trends. Whether youโ€™re an avid creator or enjoy scrolling through your feed, these changes could offer a more dynamic and visually appealing experience.
