Instagram introduces new speed-up feature for Reels

Instagram now lets you watch Reels at double speed, just like TikTok. The new feature helps you get through longer videos faster and easier.

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that lets you speed up Reels, making watching videos easier. This update allows you to play a Reel at 2x speed simply by long-pressing on your screen’s right or left side. The feature closely mirrors TikTok’s existing fast-forward option, reinforcing Instagram’s trend of adopting popular tools from its competitors.

Instagram follows TikTok’s lead in video speed controls

When TikTok first launched, videos were limited to just 15 seconds. However, as the platform grew, it expanded video lengths to accommodate longer content. TikTok introduced a speed-up option to keep engagement high, allowing users to watch videos faster. This feature became essential for those who prefer to consume content quickly.

Instagram Reels followed a similar path. Initially, the platform only allowed videos up to 15 seconds long, but now, users can upload Reels for up to three minutes. To enhance user experience, Instagram is introducing the speed-up option, making it easier for viewers to get through longer videos without losing interest.

Short-form content is shaping how you watch videos

The new fast-forward option addresses a growing concern about short-form content affecting attention spans. With platforms like TikTok and Instagram popularising bite-sized entertainment, many users struggle to focus on longer videos. By adding a fast-forward tool, Instagram ensures that longer Reels still get watched all the way through, keeping both creators and viewers engaged.

TikTok has heavily influenced Instagram’s approach to Reels from the start. Features like Remix, which allows users to interact with existing videos, closely resemble TikTok’s Duet tool. Now, with the introduction of playback speed controls, Instagram continues to refine its platform by integrating tools that make video consumption even more seamless.

The update is expected to roll out gradually to users, so if you don’t see the option yet, it should be available soon. As Instagram continues to enhance its short-form video experience, users can expect even more updates inspired by its biggest competitor.
