Instagram experiments with turning user photos into custom stickers for Reels and Stories

Instagram is testing a new feature that lets users create custom stickers from their own or others' photos for use in Reels and Stories. The tool automatically selects a photo's main subject, removes the background, and turns it into a sticker.

As reported by Engadget, Instagram is trialling a new feature that allows users to create custom stickers from their photographs and those of others to use in their Reels and Stories. Unlike Meta’s recent focus on complex, AI-generated stickers, Instagram’s new tool aims for simplicity. The feature automatically selects the main subject of a photo, removes the background, and turns it into a standalone sticker to overlay on other content.

How the new sticker feature works

Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, demonstrated the feature through a video shared on his channel. He highlighted that the tool doesn’t just limit you to using your own saved photos. In fact, users can make stickers from “eligible images you see on Instagram.” While Mosseri did not provide further specifics, his statement implies that users can allow their photos to be transformed into stickers by others.

More features in the testing phase

This sticker creation tool is still experimental and has yet to be released to everyone. It’s worth mentioning that Instagram isn’t stopping at stickers. The social media platform recently began trialling a new polling feature that will appear in the comments section of feed posts.

What to expect in the near future

For now, it’s a wait-and-see situation. Since the feature is still in testing, it’s still being determined when it will become widely available. Instagram’s continued innovations indicate that the platform is keen to engage users in new and interactive ways, whether through custom stickers or interactive polls in comments.
