Jakarta played host to the global unveiling of VISION.ev, an electric motorcycle fully designed and engineered in Indonesia, marking a significant advancement towards sustainable transportation. Revealed at the Sheraton Hotel Gandaria on 16 July 2024, this innovative vehicle is slated for market release in 2025 and aims to bolster Indonesia’s position in the global electric vehicle (EV) market.
A substantial boost for Indonesia’s EV industry
IMOTO’s latest creation, VISION.ev, exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to bolstering the local economy. Aiming for over 75% domestic component use, this motorcycle is a testament to the capabilities of Indonesian engineering. IMOTO Co-Founder Antony Lesmana says, “We are very proud of the debut of the VISION.ev concept. We hope that VISION.ev will accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global EV market. With the tagline ‘Made in Indonesia, for the World,’ VISION.ev reflects IMOTO’s commitment to promoting the nation’s innovations to the international market. From the bike design to the fast-charging battery, everything is made locally, so that we can achieve the target of at least 75% of Domestic Component Level (TKDN).”
The VISION.ev is distinguished by its fast-charging capabilities, where the battery charges from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Equipped with a 5.7 kWh battery, it offers a range of up to 160 km and a top speed of 105 km/h. It also features advanced digital amenities, such as a touchscreen, an infotainment system, keyless entry, and applications designed for tracking, geofencing, and fleet management.
Addressing environmental challenges with innovative solutions
Indonesia faces severe pollution issues, especially in urban areas where pollution cuts life expectancy by about 2.5 years. The transport sector is a major contributor to this crisis. Nevertheless, a positive shift is underway, with EV adoption expected to rise by 80% over the next six years, potentially creating a market exceeding US$20 billion. A survey by PwC revealed that half of the respondents plan to purchase electric motorcycles within the next one to three years, motivated by the vehicles’ environmental benefits, quieter operation, lower maintenance costs, and government incentives.
Doddy Lukito, another Co-Founder of IMOTO, highlighted the potential of VISION.ev to meet consumer needs effectively. “With the various advantages we offer in VISION.ev, we believe this environmentally friendly product will address key consumer concerns about EVs, such as fast charging, battery life, long-distance capability, and performance. This will help accelerate EV adoption. VISION.ev is also the answer for those seeking innovation and sustainability in their driving experience,” he stated. To facilitate usage, IMOTO is also developing a comprehensive fast-charging ecosystem. Public fast-charging stations will be installed at strategic points in cities and between cities, with 200 charging points planned in the initial phase of the rollout.
IMOTO’s commitment extends beyond manufacturing. The company aims to become a Zero-Carbon company by 2035 by continuing to develop fast-charging battery technology and eco-friendly products. This initiative aligns with its goal to provide cost-effective, clean, and efficient mobility solutions for the people of Indonesia while supporting the domestic industry, creating jobs, and nurturing local talent.
