Huawei unveils Mate X6 foldable phone globally

Huawei’s Mate X6 foldable phone debuts globally with advanced cameras, multitasking displays, and durable design. Learn about its features here.

Huawei officially unveiled the Huawei Mate X6 to a global audience on December 12, 2024, during an event in Dubai, UAE. This marks a significant moment for fans of Huawei’s foldable phones as the latest Mate X6 becomes available beyond its previous China-only predecessor.

The Huawei Mate X6 is part of the company’s flagship Mate series and is the 2024 update to its innovative Mate X line of foldable smartphones. Featuring a sleek and futuristic design, the Mate X6 boasts a Space-Age Orbit camera system. This round plate with octagon rims houses four advanced cameras:

  • 50MP main sensor with variable aperture (f/1.4-4.0), RYYB sensor, and optical image stabilisation (OIS).
  • 40MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2, RYYB sensor).
  • 48MP telephoto lens (f/3.0, RYYB sensor, OIS) with 4x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom.
  • An Ultra Chroma Camera with 1.5 million spectral channels for unmatched image clarity.

Photography enthusiasts will also appreciate its macro mode (5cm focus distance) and features like Ultra Speed Snapshot, which easily captures fast-moving subjects.

Stunning displays and multitasking

The Mate X6’s book-style foldable design offers two high-quality displays:

  • A 7.93-inch main screen (2,440 x 2,440 pixels resolution) with LTPO OLED technology and adaptive refresh rates between 1-120Hz.
  • A 6.45-inch cover screen (2,440 x 1,080 pixels resolution) is also equipped with LTPO OLED and adaptive refresh rates.

Both displays feature “HDR Vivid” for enhanced dynamic range. Multitasking reaches new heights with support for running three apps simultaneously, while Smart Control Buttons lets you customise shortcuts directly on your Home Screen. For added privacy, the main display’s smart camera detects when someone is peeking at your screen and hides sensitive content.

Built for durability and performance

Huawei has prioritised durability with its Kunlun Glass 2nd Generation, which offers 25 times greater drop resistance. Inside, a carbon fibre plate increases stiffness by 65%, and the aviation-grade aluminium middle frame boosts impact resistance by 37%. Its hinge, made from ultra-high-strength steel, and IPX8 water resistance ensure the phone can handle the challenges of daily use.

Powered by a 5,110mAh battery, the Mate X6 supports fast charging with 66W wired and 50W wireless Huawei SuperCharge.

EMUI 15 and global compatibility

Unlike the HarmonyOS found in Huawei’s China-specific devices, the global version of the Mate X6 runs on EMUI 15, based on Android 12. This ensures compatibility with Android and Huawei’s AppGallery, though Google Mobile Services remain unsupported. Users can still sideload apps from third-party platforms if needed.

The Mate X6’s chipset wasn’t mentioned during the event, but reports suggest it features the Kirin 9020, the same processor used in the Huawei Mate 70 series launched earlier this month.

Huawei launched the Mate X6 alongside several other products, including the Nova 13 series smartphones, Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4 wireless earbuds, Huawei FreeClip Rose Gold, and the Huawei MatePad 11.5 tablet.

As for pricing and availability in Singapore and other regions, Huawei has yet to announce details.
