Google unveils a new streaming player design, moving away from Chromecast

Google introduces the new Google TV Streamer, replacing the Chromecast with a set-top box design. It will debut on August 13 alongside other new products.

Google is significantly shifting from its traditional HDMI dongle design for streaming devices. The new device, the “Google TV Streamer,” is set to replace both the look and the name of past Chromecasts. Images released by 9to5Google reveal a more conventional set-top box design, departing from the familiar Chromecast style.

A new design approach

The Google TV Streamer features a slanted top, aligning with Google’s recent hardware aesthetics. The included remote resembles the last-generation Chromecast remote but is longer and includes a volume rocker on the front, enhancing user control.

The official debut of the Google TV Streamer is expected at Googleโ€™s hardware event on August 13. This event is anticipated to showcase new products, including the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 3 XL, and potentially other surprises.

Competitive edge

Many have been waiting for Google to develop a more robust streaming player that could rival the Apple TV 4K. The Chromecast with Google TV, launched in 2020, did not quite meet these expectations, leaving the Nvidia Shield as the top performer in the market. The upcoming Google TV Streamer might change this, depending on whether it delivers enhanced performance or maintains Google’s typical sub-US$100 price point.
