Future Apple Watch models could feature built-in cameras for AI

Apple is working on Apple Watch models with built-in cameras, expected in 2027, to enhance AI features like Visual Intelligence and real-world recognition.

Apple is reportedly developing new Apple Watch models with built-in cameras, which could transform them into AI-powered devices.

Cameras could bring AI features to the Apple Watch

According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing several versions of the Apple Watch, including cameras. These cameras would allow the watch to “see” the world around you, enabling advanced AI features. One key feature that could benefit from this is Visual Intelligence.

Apple first introduced Visual Intelligence with the iOS 18.2 update. This feature lets you press and hold the Camera Control button to access real-time information about objects, landmarks, plants, animals, and even translate text. If integrated into the Apple Watch, it could enhance everyday tasks with AI-powered insights.

Possible camera placements and design changes

Bloomberg’s report suggests that Apple is considering different camera placements. One possibility is embedding it directly into the display of the standard Apple Watch model. Another explored option is placing the camera near the digital crown and the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra.

However, Apple’s expectations regarding how users will use these cameras remain unclear. Since smartwatches are worn on the wrist, capturing photos or videos with them may feel awkward compared to using a smartphone.

Apple Watch with cameras could launch in 2027

The camera-equipped Apple Watches are expected to be released in 2027. They may launch alongside another futuristic Apple product โ€“ AirPods with built-in cameras. Reports suggest that Apple is developing AirPods with infrared cameras designed to enhance spatial audio and integrate with the Apple Vision Pro.

Despite these ambitious plans, Appleโ€™s timeline for launching these products could face delays. The recent restructuring of the Siri team might impact development, potentially pushing back the release dates.

With AI becoming a key focus for Apple, adding cameras to the Apple Watch and AirPods could mark a major shift in wearable technology. Whether these features will be practical remains to be seen, but they could pave the way for a new era of smart accessories.
