Fr8Labs secures US$1.5 million to revolutionise Asia’s logistics sector

Fr8Labs secures US$1.5 million to digitise Asia's logistics industry, aiming to create an open ecosystem and enhance operational efficiency with its SaaS operating system.

In a bold move to transform the logistics landscape of Southeast Asia, Fr8Labs has successfully secured a significant investment of US$1.5 million. This funding round, led by East Ventures, marks a crucial step in the startup’s journey to digitise the region’s freight forwarding operations.

Breaking new ground in logistics technology

Fr8Labs, based in Singapore and Indonesia, is taking on the challenge of modernising the logistics industry in Asia, a region where small and medium businesses (SMBs) dominate the market. This landscape contrasts sharply with Western countries, where larger enterprises lead the way in digital integration. Fr8Labs aims to bridge this technology gap with its innovative software-as-a-service (SaaS) operating system. The goal is to create an open ecosystem accessible to various stakeholders through application programming interfaces (APIs).

A journey of innovation and experience

The driving force behind Fr8Labs is its founders, Glenn Lai and Felix Lu. Lai started his career at Sinar Gas Golden Agri Resources with deep roots in the logistics industry in 2015. He later joined Bizzy, an e-commerce logistics firm in Indonesia, as the Chief Operating Officer, alongside Lu, who served as the Vice President of Product. Their experiences at Bizzy and subsequent roles highlighted the stark differences in digital adoption between Asian and Western logistics markets.

Tackling the unique challenges of Asia’s logistics

Lai points out the fragmentation of Asia’s freight forwarding industry as a key obstacle to technological advancement. Unlike the Western market, where prominent players can drive digital adoption, Asian SMBs lack the influence and unified systems necessary for such a shift. Additionally, existing digital solutions are often tailored to specific markets and fail to accommodate the unique requirements of Asian logistics, such as varying accounting and customs policies.

This reliance on traditional methods, like on-premise software and manual data entry, hinders scalability and efficiency, leading to costly errors and penalties. Fr8Labs addresses these challenges by offering comprehensive digital solutions that streamline operations and facilitate collaboration across departments.

Expanding the Fr8Labs ecosystem

Fr8Labs is not just about digitising existing processes; it’s about enhancing the entire logistics experience. The company’s Operating System supports a freight forwarder’s workflow, from quotation to job accounting. A key feature is the ability to automate document creation from uploaded PDFs, simplifying tasks like customs submissions.

The company’s future plans include adding features like FX trade, financing, and cargo insurance and developing a marketplace. The overarching vision is to provide a seamless operating platform, akin to the ecosystems created by tech giants like Android and Apple.

Endorsed by industry leaders

East Ventures, a leading investor in Fr8Labs, recognises the startup’s potential to revolutionise logistics in Southeast Asia. According to Roderick Purwana, managing partner at East Ventures, Fr8Labs’ innovative solutions are poised to address the digital challenges faced by the industry, increasing efficiency and adding value across the supply chain.

Fr8Labs is set to redefine logistics in Asia, driven by visionary leadership and backed by influential investors. With its cutting-edge technology and strategic expansion plans, Fr8Labs is on a path to transforming how goods are moved across the continent.
