Discover songs on YouTube Music for Android by humming

YouTube Music for Android introduces a new feature that lets you search for songs by humming, making it easier to identify your favourite tunes.

YouTube Music for Android has launched a highly anticipated feature that allows users to search for songs by humming. This tool, first reported by 9to5Google, enables you to find a song by humming, singing, or playing the melody on an instrument. After several months of testing since March, it is finally available to users.

Using the humming search feature

To use the humming search feature, open the YouTube Music app and tap the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner. Look for the waveform icon next to the microphone icon, tap it, and start humming or singing the tune. A full-screen results page will appear, showing the song’s cover art, name, artist, album, release year, and other relevant information. This feature leverages AI technology similar to the Pixel’s Now Playing feature, which matches the sound to the original recording.

Availability and future plans

This feature comes with a server-side update in version 7.02 of YouTube Music for Android. There is no current information regarding the iOS release, but it is expected to arrive soon.

Although this feature is new to YouTube Music, other platforms have offered similar capabilities. Google Search introduced a “hum to search” tool in 2020, and the regular YouTube app followed suit last year. Deezer, another online music streaming service, launched its own version of this tool in 2022.

The new humming search feature on YouTube Music for Android makes it effortless to find your favourite songs, even if you can’t remember the lyrics. This tool ensures you can quickly identify and enjoy your music by simply humming the tune.
