Discord welcomes developers with open arms: New SDK launches

Discover how Discord is revolutionising its platform by introducing a new SDK for developers to create interactive games and apps.

Are you ready to dive into a more immersive and interactive Discord experience? Get set, as Discord is rolling out the red carpet for developers, inviting them to create new games and apps directly within its popular chat platform. Mark your calendar for March 18, as this is when Discord will launch its new Embedded App Software Development Kit (SDK), revolutionising how users engage with the platform.

A new playground for developers

Discord users have been enjoying a selection of minigames and apps for some time now, thanks to the platform’s Activities feature. This feature has brought apps like YouTube, poker minigames, and even a shared whiteboard experience into the chat interface. These apps, appearing as embedded iframes within Discord, were previously available only to a select group of developers.

The tide is changing, however. As stated in a recent Discord blog post, all developers will soon have the opportunity to create unique games and experiences. This move aims to transform Discord into a bustling hub where developers can build, share, distribute, and monetise their creations.

A seamless experience across servers

In addition to this exciting development, Discord is testing a new feature allowing users to add apps to their accounts. Your favourite apps could follow you across different servers, providing a consistent and personalised experience. This experiment will launch in tandem with the app SDK on March 18th.

Fueling creativity and innovation

But that’s not all. Discord is reviving its app pitches, a platform where developers can present their prototype app ideas and potentially secure funding up to US$30,000. Last year, this initiative supported various projects, including AI tools, an app for artists, a coral reef cam app, and a city-building minigame.

These developments are pivotal for Discord, following a recent announcement of laying off 17% of its workforce. The company focuses on enhancing user experience and growth, partnering with game developers to offer themed avatars and profile effects.

In summary, Discord is creating a more dynamic and developer-friendly environment. With these new tools and opportunities, the platform is set to become a significant player in the app development world. The future looks bright for Discord users and developers alike.
