DeepSeek’s app disappears from Apple and Google stores in Italy

After regulators raised concerns over its data privacy practices, DeepSeek’s app is no longer available in Apple and Google stores in Italy.

You can no longer download DeepSeek’s app in Italy as it has disappeared from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. This comes just hours after Italian authorities requested details on how the Chinese AI startup manages user data.

The app has been gaining popularity globally, topping the download charts in multiple countries. In the U.S., it holds the number one spot on both the App Store and Play Store.

Privacy concerns trigger regulatory action

A consumer group called Euroconsumers recently filed a complaint with Italy’s data protection authority (DPA), questioning DeepSeek’s handling of personal data. In response, the regulator formally asked the company for more information and set a 20-day deadline for a reply.

The primary concern stems from DeepSeek’s privacy policy, which states that user data may be stored on servers in China. The policy explains:

“Where we transfer any personal information out of the country where you live, including for one or more of the purposes as set out in this Policy, we will do so in accordance with the requirements of applicable data protection laws.”

While the Italian DPA is the first regulator to take formal action, other European authorities have warned that AI services must comply with the region’s strict data protection laws. However, they have not specifically mentioned DeepSeek.

Apple and Google remain silent

So far, neither Apple nor Google has commented on why the app was removed from their platforms in Italy. It remains unclear whether the removal was due to regulatory pressure or if DeepSeek took it down voluntarily.
