ChatGPT sees rapid growth, doubling its weekly users in under a year

ChatGPT's weekly users have doubled to over 200 million in less than a year, with widespread use among Fortune 500 companies and new AI safety measures.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has experienced significant growth, now boasting over 200 million weekly users, a figure that has doubled in less than a year. This increase, first reported by Axios, was later confirmed by OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson in a statement to The Verge. Last November, OpenAI reported 100 million weekly active users, meaning the service has seen a remarkable surge in popularity since then.

Growing use among Fortune 500 companies

The growth of ChatGPT isn’t limited to individual users. According to Christianson, 92% of Fortune 500 companies now use OpenAI’s products, highlighting the company’s expanding influence in the corporate world. Additionally, the release of OpenAIโ€™s more affordable and intelligent model, GPT-4o Mini, has doubled the usage of the companyโ€™s API services, indicating a wider adoption of AI tools across various sectors.

Since ChatGPT was first introduced in late 2022, other tech giants have responded with their AI-driven chat platforms. Google, Microsoft, and Meta have each launched competing AI chat interfaces. In a related announcement today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed that Meta’s AI assistant has reached over 400 million monthly active users and 185 million weekly active users. Meta’s assistant has yet to be rolled out in key markets such as the UK, Brazil, or the European Union, suggesting potential for further growth.

Government involvement in AI safety

In addition to its rapid growth, OpenAI is now collaborating with government agencies to ensure the safe deployment of AI technology. Earlier today, the US AI Safety Institute revealed that OpenAI and Anthropic have agreed to allow the government to evaluate their major AI models before being released to the public. This move could mark a significant step towards more stringent oversight of AI developments.

Meanwhile, rumours are circulating that Apple and Nvidia might be among the next round of investors in OpenAI. These potential investments would further strengthen OpenAI’s position in the AI industry, allowing for continued innovation and growth.

Overall, the increase in users and expanding corporate adoption reflect ChatGPT’s growing role in consumer and business applications. As AI technology evolves, platforms like ChatGPT will become even more integrated into daily life.
