ChatGPT introduces “Projects” to help you stay organised

Stay organised with ChatGPT’s new “Projects” feature, designed to group your tasks, chats, and files for easier access and tailored responses.

OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT called “Projects,” which is designed to make managing your tasks and ideas much easier.

If you use ChatGPT for brainstorming or planning, the new “Projects” feature will be particularly helpful. It’s a simple folder-like system that allows you to organise your chats and tasks into dedicated spaces.

What is the “Projects” feature?

Projects create a more structured way to use ChatGPT. Instead of scrolling through a long list of previous conversations, you can now group related chats under a project folder. For example, if you’re planning a home renovation or preparing for a gift exchange, you can keep everything connected to those topics in one place.

Once you create a project, you can name it, pick an icon colour, and add relevant files or notes. You can also give ChatGPT specific instructions on tailoring its responses to that project. For instance, if you’re working on a creative writing project, you might set instructions for ChatGPT to provide feedback on tone and style.

In a demo video shared by OpenAI, an employee demonstrated how Projects could be used to organise tasks like Secret Santa planning or home maintenance schedules. This feature may be handy for anyone juggling multiple tasks or working collaboratively.

When can you access “Projects”?

OpenAI started rolling out the feature on December 14 to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams users. Free-tier users will get access “as soon as possible,” while Enterprise and Education (Edu) users are expected to see it early in the new year.

Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, announced the feature as part of OpenAI’s “12 days of ship-mas,” a series of daily updates highlighting new features and improvements.

What else has OpenAI announced?

Projects are just one of the updates OpenAI has rolled out recently. Other announcements during the “12 days of ship-mas” include:

  • Sora video generator: A video creation tool further expanding ChatGPT’s creative capabilities.
  • Canvas view: A new interface allowing users to organise their thoughts visually.
  • ChatGPT Pro subscription: A US$200-per-month tier offering faster access and priority features.

These updates show OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the user experience, whether for personal use or professional projects.

If you rely on ChatGPT for work or personal organisation, Projects could be a game-changer. The feature helps you stay focused and efficient, keeping your work neatly categorised and easily accessible. It’s a step up from manually organising your ideas, offering a cleaner and more flexible solution.

With this new tool, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as not just a chatbot but a comprehensive productivity assistant. Whether brainstorming ideas, planning events, or managing long-term projects, the Projects feature makes it easier to keep track of everything in one place.
