Canon unveils new cameras and lens to support content creators’ video needs

Canon unveils video-focused EOS R50 V, PowerShot V1, and power zoom lens to support creators with new filming and livestreaming features.

Canon has announced the launch of three new products aimed at meeting the evolving needs of content creators focused on video production. The EOS R50 V, PowerShot V1, and RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ introduce a series of video-centric enhancements, making it easier for users to produce high-quality video content across a range of platforms and formats.

Andrew Koh, Senior Vice President and Head of Singapore Operations Group, Canon Singapore, said, โ€œWith the launch of our new PowerShot V series and EOS V series products, we are empowering the new generation of video-centric creators. These new innovations are specially designed with features that will elevate their creative vision, and redefine the world of storytelling.โ€

Designed with video in mind

The EOS R50 V is an interchangeable lens camera that features a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, similar in size to the Super 35mm sensor found in Canonโ€™s professional cinema cameras like the EOS C70. The camera has been developed for budding creators who want more flexibility and improved handling for video production.

Meanwhile, the PowerShot V1 is Canonโ€™s first compact camera built specifically for video. It is fitted with a 22.3-megapixel 1.4-inch type sensor, which is roughly twice the size of the 1-inch sensors commonly used in similar models. The camera has a built-in zoom lens that offers a 17-52mm equivalent field of view for video and 16-50mm for still photography.

Both the EOS R50 V and PowerShot V1 feature lightweight, compact bodies without viewfinders, making them ideal for use with grips and gimbals. Their ergonomic designs reduce strain during handheld shooting sessions, and key buttons are placed for easy one-handed operation. The EOS R50 V includes a new button layout that features a mode dial tailored for video, a zoom lever, and dedicated buttons for livestreaming and colour adjustments. The camera is also optimised for vertical video with features like a side-mounted tripod socket, rotating display, and strategically placed buttons.

For the PowerShot V1, Canon has included a fast f/2.8 to f/4.5 ultra-wide zoom lens with a 16-50mm equivalent focal length. It also comes with a cooling fan to help disperse heat, enabling longer recording and livestreaming times.

Creative tools and connectivity

The EOS R50 V and PowerShot V1 include features designed to make it easier for creators to achieve their desired visual style. Both cameras offer a Smooth Skin mode and 14 built-in colour filters. Canonโ€™s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system, Movie for Close-up Demos mode, and Movie Digital IS further improve ease of use, enabling sharper focus and stable footage.

Advanced recording features are also included, such as 10-bit Canon Log 3 for greater colour grading flexibility, 4K 30p oversampled footage, 4K 60p cropped video, and Full HD slow motion up to 120p. Users can also shoot in PASM modes and capture RAW images.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth and USB-C for syncing with the Canon Camera Connect app, and both cameras can double as webcams with a single USB-C connection.

The EOS R50 V introduces several professional features from Canonโ€™s Cinema EOS line, including support for Custom Pictures and LUTs, HDR recording modes (HDR PQ and HLG), and industry-standard formats like XF-HEVC S and XF-AVC S. The camera also includes professional monitoring tools such as false colours, and a Slow & Fast Motion mode that enables slow motion down to 1/5x speed and time-lapse video up to 60x speed.

Users can take advantage of 3-mic noise reduction technology and support for 24-bit 4-channel LPCM audio input, making the R50 V well-suited for scenarios with multiple sound sources, like concerts or interviews. The Register People Priority mode helps track and detect pre-registered individuals in crowded environments.

Livestreaming in 4K 60p is possible with UVC and UAC support over a single USB-C cable. The camera is also compatible with Canonโ€™s Live Switcher Mobile Multi-Camera app, enabling multi-angle livestreams with other smart devices.

Compact design and powerful features

The PowerShot V1 combines the best aspects of Canonโ€™s PowerShot V10 and G7 X Mark III cameras, but with improved specifications. It includes a larger 1.4-inch image sensor, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, and a 3-stop built-in ND filter for bright-light shooting. With a maximum native ISO of 12,800, the camera offers enhanced low-light performance, and a new Subject Tracking IS feature keeps subjects stable in frame during filming.

Canon’s first power zoom lens

Canon also revealed its first RF lens with built-in power zoom โ€“ the RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ. Compact and lightweight at around 6cm in length and 181g in weight, the lens offers 15 selectable zoom speeds and can be controlled using the lens zoom ring, the EOS R50 Vโ€™s zoom lever, or remotely via the Camera Connect app. The fixed-length design ensures a stable centre of gravity, which is especially useful when mounted on a gimbal.

This lens delivers up to 5 stops of optical image stabilisation for stills and 5-axis stabilisation for video. When paired with cameras that feature In-Body IS, it offers improved Coordinated Control IS. With a wide 22.4mm equivalent angle at its shortest focal length, itโ€™s ideal for video, while the 30mm (48mm equivalent) zoom range offers a natural perspective for close-up shots. The lens also features a 0.15m minimum focusing distance and 0.38x magnification.

Pricing and availability

The EOS R50 V (body only) will be available from 21 April 2025 at a recommended retail price of S$899, while the kit with the RF-S14-30mm lens will be priced at S$1,199. The PowerShot V1 will be available starting 1 April 2025 for S$1,399. The RF-S14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens on its own will be released in July 2025 and retail at S$519.
