Apple’s sleek iPhone 17 Air is expected to launch this autumn

Apple’s iPhone 17 Air, a slim model launching this autumn, may feature future techs like foldable-ready design, in-house modems, and AI advancements.

Apple may soon introduce the iPhone 17 Air, a slimmer version of its popular smartphone, which is expected to debut this autumn. Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman, writing in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, revealed that the iPhone 17 Air will serve as a “testing ground for future technologies,” potentially paving the way for Apple’s first foldable devices.

A thinner design with familiar branding

The name “iPhone 17 Air” aligns with Apple’s tradition of using the “Air” moniker for its thinnest products, such as the MacBook Air and iPad Air. According to Gurman, this new iPhone will be around 2 millimetres thinner than current models. Recent leaks suggest it will measure between 5.5mm and 6.25mm thick, making it comparable to the M4 iPad Pro and slimmer than Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date, the iPhone 6.

While the sleek design will be a standout feature, it is more than aesthetics. Gurman explains that reducing the iPhone’s thickness is crucial to Apple’s ambitions for foldable devices, including iPads and iPhones.

Testing future technologies

The iPhone 17 Air may also showcase some of Apple’s latest hardware advancements. It could feature the company’s in-house cell modem, codenamed Sinope, which is expected to first appear in the iPhone SE earlier in the year. Additionally, the 2024 iPhone lineup is likely to debut Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, although it remains uncertain if these will be included in the 17 Air model.

Rumours also suggest the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display, supporting a 120Hz variable refresh rate. This technology has so far been exclusive to the Pro models in the iPhone range. The device might include Apple’s A19 chip, 8GB of RAM, and advanced AI features, offering a significant boost in performance.

A fresh approach to cameras

Unlike its counterparts, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to adopt a more straightforward camera setup. Reports indicate it will feature a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel selfie camera. This streamlined approach might appeal to users prioritising portability and sleek design over advanced camera systems.

The iPhone 17 Air is shaping up to be an exciting addition to Apple’s product lineup. Offering cutting-edge technology in an ultra-slim package, it is anticipated to launch this autumn. This launch could set the tone for Apple’s next generation of foldable devices and innovation.
