Apple’s first foldable phone could change the game with a book-style design

Apple’s first foldable may resemble a book-style device like the Galaxy Fold, potentially revitalising the market by 2026.

might take a different approach with its first foldable device, steering away from the clamshell design many had anticipated. Earlier this year, The Information reported that Apple was developing at least two prototypes featuring a folding mechanism similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. However, new insights suggest a change in direction.

A Samsung Galaxy Fold-like design?

Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Apple’s first foldable device is more likely to follow the Galaxy Z Fold6 design than a flip-style phone. This would mean a larger, book-like folding mechanism instead of the compact clamshell form.

Young’s predictions could reshape expectations for Apple’s entry into the foldable market. He noted that foldable phone display orders are set to decline in four out of the following five quarters. However, Apple’s anticipated launch of its foldable device could revitalise the segment.

A boost for the foldable market by 2026

Young believes Apple’s entrance into the foldable market will bring much-needed innovation and interest. Improvements in form factor, functionality, durability, and use cases could shift the market dynamics in 2026 when foldable devices are projected to experience over 30% growth. The trend is expected to continue, with a 20% growth rate forecast for 2027 and 2028.

However, the growth path won’t be smooth. Young predicts the foldable phone display market will see a 4% drop in 2025, with demand stalling around 22 million units. This comes after a decline in display orders during Q3 2024, marking the first decrease in the foldable phone market.

Apple’s potential to redefine the foldable segment could create new opportunities for innovation, giving consumers an alternative to existing designs. For now, the world waits to see how Apple’s first foldable device will shape the future of smartphones.
