Apple will unveil the second-generation AirTag next year

Apple is set to release a second-generation AirTag with improved location tracking in mid-2025, featuring an enhanced chip for better performance.

Apple is set to release its second-generation AirTag next year, according to a report by Mark Gurman in his latest “Power On”, a newsletter by Bloomberg. The new AirTag, codenamed B589, is expected to launch around mid-2025.

Apple is currently conducting test runs with suppliers in Asia to ensure the new AirTag meets its high standards. The second-generation AirTag is anticipated to feature a more advanced chip, which will significantly enhance location tracking capabilities.

The first-generation AirTag, launched three years ago, uses Bluetooth Low Energy radio and a U1 ultra-wideband (UWB) chip to communicate its location to a paired iPhone via the Find My app. This technology has been praised for its accuracy and ease of use.

A look back at the first-generation AirTag

When Apple introduced the first-generation AirTag, it quickly became popular among iPhone users. The device is compact, lightweight, and competitively priced, making it a favourite choice for tracking personal items. However, users noted that the polished metal cover tends to scuff and scratch easily, which was a minor drawback.

Despite this, the AirTag is considered the best Bluetooth tracker available for iPhone owners, thanks to its seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem and reliable performance.

What to expect from the second-generation AirTag

With the upcoming second-generation AirTag, Apple aims to address previous issues and further improve the device’s functionality. The enhanced chip is expected to offer better precision and faster location updates, making it even more effective for tracking lost items.

As Apple continues to innovate and improve its products, the new AirTag is likely to build on the success of its predecessor, offering users an even more reliable and efficient way to keep track of their belongings.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the anticipated launch date next year.
