Apple to unveil new iPads on May 7: What to expect from the ‘Let Loose’ Event

Discover what to expect from Apple's "Let Loose" event on May 7, including new iPad Pro and iPad Air models and the latest accessories.

Apple has announced its upcoming product showcase, set for May 7, just weeks before the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) begins. The event, intriguingly named “Let Loose,” promises exciting developments, notably a refresh of the iPad lineup. This speculation follows months of rumours, with the event’s teaser image—a hand gripping an Apple Pencil—hinting at new tablet features.

What’s new with the iPad Pro and iPad Air?

The iPad Pro is poised for significant updates. It’s been roughly 18 months since Apple last refreshed its tablets, making them ripe for innovation. Notably, the introduction of M3 chips is anticipated for the new iPad Pro models, following their predecessors that featured M2 chipsets.

A major enhancement in the upcoming iPad Pro models is expected to be the to displays. This change, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, aims to offer richer colours and deeper blacks. Additionally, the new OLED panels are thinner compared to traditional LCD panels, potentially slimming down the iPad Pro. It’s reported that the 11-inch model may reduce in thickness by 0.8 mm to 5.1 mm, and the 12.9-inch model could slim down by 1.5 mm to 5 mm. There are also whispers of thinner bezels, by up to 15%, and possibly a glass-backed design to accommodate MagSafe charging. Another user-friendly tweak might see the front-facing camera moved to the landscape edge, mirroring a change made to the entry-level iPad last year.

The iPad Air, having been overlooked for over two years, is expected to see an upgrade to M2 chips, differentiating it from the Pro models. This model might also feature a front-facing camera on the landscape edge. Excitingly, Apple might be preparing to launch a 12.9-inch iPad Air, offering a more budget-friendly option for those desiring a larger screen, despite this seeming a departure from the ‘Air’ ethos.

Further excitement surrounds potential accessories. Mark Gurman has hinted at a new version of the Magic Keyboard, exclusively for the iPad Pro. This upgrade is said to enhance the iPad’s resemblance to a laptop, featuring a larger trackpad and a sturdy aluminium frame while maintaining the current model’s external cover material.

Additionally, a new Apple Pencil is on the horizon, potentially replacing the second-generation model. This updated accessory might include innovative features like a squeeze gesture for specific actions and integration with the Find My network. It may also be compatible with Vision Pro drawing apps, enhancing its utility for creative users.

Despite the anticipation, not all products are due for an update. The iPad mini, which last saw a new model in September 2021, and the base iPad are unlikely to be featured at the “Let Loose” event. Reports suggest that updates for these models could emerge later in the year, but it’s best not to hold one’s breath for May 7.
