Apple to bring lossless and ultra-low latency audio to AirPods Max with USB-C

In an upcoming update, Apple is adding lossless and ultra-low latency audio to the AirPods Max with USB-C, improving sound quality and performance.

Apple has announced a major firmware update for its AirPods Max with USB-C, bringing two significant upgrades to enhance audio quality and performance.

Lossless audio support arrives

With the upcoming update, the AirPods Max with USB-C will support lossless audio up to 24-bit, 48kHz. Using a wired connection, you can enjoy high-quality, lossless, personalised spatial audio. However, it is important to note that this feature requires a USB-C to USB-C cable, as the AirPods Max do not support wireless lossless audio. This is a common limitation among Bluetooth headphones, with only a few models on the market offering wireless lossless playback.

For many users, this feature has been long overdue. Apple introduced lossless music to its entire catalogue on Apple Music in 2021, yet its premium headphones could not fully support it. This update finally addresses that gap, making the AirPods Max a more attractive option for audiophiles prioritising sound quality.

Ultra-low latency for professionals

The firmware update will also introduce ultra-low latency audio support, which is especially useful for professionals in music production and other audio-related fields. This improvement will ensure minimal delay between sound input and output, providing a more seamless experience when monitoring or editing audio.

To take advantage of this feature, you will need a USB-C to USB-C cable or a USB-C to 3.5mm cable. By reducing audio lag, this update could make the AirPods Max a viable option for more professional use cases.

Only for the latest AirPods Max with USB-C

It is important to note that these new features will only be available on the latest AirPods Max with USB-C, which Apple introduced in September. If you own the older AirPods Max with a Lightning port, these updates will not apply, as the hardware is incompatible.

The firmware update is set to arrive alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4, all expected to be released in April. Once available, you can update your AirPods Max through the usual automatic firmware update process.

With these enhancements, Apple is making its flagship headphones more appealing to users who demand high-quality audio, whether for personal enjoyment or professional work.
