Apple recruits top AI talent from Google for a Swiss lab venture

Apple intensifies AI efforts by setting up a "Vision Lab" in Zurich and recruiting top AI experts from Google, with big reveals expected at WWDC 2024.

Apple’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence (AI) includes the establishment of a research facility in Zurich, known as the “Vision Lab,”  where the focus is on developing cutting-edge AI technologies. This initiative came to light through a report from the Times, which has revealed significant details about Apple’s strategic moves in AI.

The Financial Times article cites a Swiss university professor who claims that Apple’s new lab was set up following the acquisition of two local AI startups. The “Vision Lab” reportedly concentrates on advanced AI technologies similar to those that power OpenAI’s , along with more sophisticated models capable of processing both text and visual inputs to respond to user queries.

A significant portion of the talent at Apple’s AI lab has been sourced from Google. Research into LinkedIn profiles, job postings, and academic papers suggests that Apple has successfully attracted at least 36 high-ranking Google AI specialists to its team. This move underscores Apple’s commitment to bolstering its AI capabilities by recruiting top-tier talent.

Apple is preparing to unveil its latest developments in AI at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. Anticipated announcements include an upgraded version of Siri enhanced with generative AI technology and a new AI-driven chatbot that integrates OpenAI’s technologies. Moreover, the first hints of Apple’s refined AI strategy are expected on May 7, coinciding with the launch of the new iPad Pros. These devices are rumoured to be equipped with the next-generation M4 chip, featuring more robust neural engines designed to support increased AI processing directly on the device.

As AI continues to transform technological landscapes, Apple’s strategic investments and recruitment from industry leaders like Google indicate a serious commitment to not only keeping pace but leading in the development of AI solutions.
