Apple has announced a significant expansion of its Ang Mo Kio campus in Singapore, committing over US$250 million to the project. This investment is aimed at accommodating new roles in artificial intelligence (AI) and other vital areas.
Apple’s long-standing presence in Singapore
Apple’s relationship with Singapore began in 1981, starting with a modest team of 72 employees who focused on the Apple II. Over the decades, Apple’s presence in the region has grown significantly, with the company now employing more than 3,600 people in Singapore. These offices serve as a crucial hub for Apple’s operations across the region.
Singapore holds the distinction of hosting one of the few Vision Pro labs in the world. Additionally, Apple recently inaugurated Southeast Asia’s first developer centre in the one-north district, further solidifying its commitment to the region.
A new chapter for Apple in Singapore
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, expressed his enthusiasm about the expansion. “Singapore is truly a one-of-a-kind place, and we are proud of the connection we’ve built with this dynamic community of creators, learners, and dreamers,” he said. Cook highlighted the pivotal role the Singapore teams have played in enhancing customer experiences and shared his excitement about the company’s future prospects in the region.
Sustainable development is on the horizon
The expansion will commence with the redevelopment of two buildings acquired in 2022, which are adjacent to Apple’s existing facilities. Although the completion date for the construction has not been announced, Apple has emphasised that the new campus, like all its facilities worldwide, will operate entirely on renewable energy. Since 2015, the company’s Singapore operations have been powered by solar energy. Moreover, the expanded campus aims to achieve LEED Gold certification, demonstrating Apple’s commitment to sustainable development.
