Apple may launch a 27-inch Mini LED Studio Display this year

Apple might refresh its Studio Display with a 27-inch Mini LED version later this year, offering better performance and contrast.

Apple could refresh its Studio Display later this year, with rumours suggesting the introduction of a 27-inch Mini LED display. This update would bring a significant change, offering improvements in display technology.

A potential upgrade for the Studio Display

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), recently revealed on social media that Apple may launch a new 27-inch Mini LED display before the year ends. If true, this would be a notable upgrade from the current 2022 Apple Studio Display, which uses a standard LED panel. The switch to Mini LED technology could enhance performance and add new features to the Studio Display.

Mini LED is known for offering superior performance compared to traditional LED displays. This technology uses a much higher number of tiny LED backlights, resulting in better light control and deeper blacks. The increased contrast ratio enhances the viewing experience, providing sharper images and more vibrant colours.

A surprising turn of events

This announcement from Ross Young is quite unexpected, especially given his comments in April 2023, where he suggested Apple had abandoned plans for a new 27-inch display. At that time, he stated that Apple had “killed off” the project after Bloomberg reported in December 2022 that Apple was working on several new external monitors, all of which would be powered by Apple Silicon.

Apple has reversed its decision, and we could soon see the long-awaited update to the Studio Display. The new Mini LED version would bring a fresh look to Apple’s range of professional monitors, potentially offering even more options for creative professionals and tech enthusiasts.

What to expect from the new display

In addition to the Mini LED upgrade, rumours suggest that the 27-inch Mini LED Studio Display could be sourced from LG Display. LG is reportedly developing a range of new panels, including versions for the 24-inch iMac, the 27-inch iMac, and a 32-inch replacement for the Pro Display XDR. This could mean that Apple’s new display might feature a panel developed by LG, helping to bring even more value to the upcoming Studio Display.

The potential release of a 27-inch Mini LED Studio Display would be a major update for Apple fans and those needing high-quality monitors for work or personal use. Whether or not Apple unveils this new display later this year remains to be seen, but there is a lot of excitement around the possibilities.
