Apple invests billions in satellite connectivity to enhance iPhone features

Apple invested US$1.5 billion in Globalstar to improve satellite services and enhance iPhone connectivity in areas without cellular coverage.

Apple is taking a giant leap forward in satellite technology, ensuring better connectivity for iPhone users in remote areas. Investing heavily in its partner Globalstar, the tech giant doubles down on satellite services to provide seamless communication, even where cellular coverage is unavailable.

This new chapter in Apple’s journey began with its collaboration with Globalstar in 2022. Today, the company has pledged a massive US$1.5 billion investment to solidify its position in the growing direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communication market.

Apple and Globalstar forge a stronger partnership

Apple’s investment consists of two key components: a US$1.1 billion cash infusion to enhance Globalstar’s infrastructure and US$400 million allocated for a 20% equity stake. This substantial funding will support Globalstar’s ambitious plans to expand its low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network.

Globalstar currently operates a constellation of 31 satellites. With Apple’s backing, the company has already placed orders for up to 26 additional satellites, strengthening its network and providing broader, more reliable coverage. Notably, 85% of Globalstar’s network capacity will be dedicated exclusively to supporting Apple’s services.

This deal also underscores the rising importance of LEO technology in consumer communication. By enabling standard smartphones to connect directly with satellites, Apple is setting the stage for a significant shift in how we stay connected.

A new era of connectivity for iPhone users

Apple’s investment in Globalstar is one of the largest partnerships between a consumer electronics giant and a satellite communications provider. This collaboration ensures that Apple remains at the forefront of the D2D communication market, poised to revolutionise connectivity.

The announcement of this partnership has already impacted the market. Globalstar’s stock surged by 31.4%, reflecting the industry’s confidence in this game-changing initiative.

This could mean greater freedom and reliability for iPhone users, especially those in rural or remote locations. With satellite connectivity becoming an integral part of the iPhone experience, Apple continues to prove its commitment to innovation and delivering cutting-edge solutions.

As the tech world watches this deal unfold, the possibilities for enhanced connectivity are limitless. This partnership promises to reshape the landscape of mobile communication, making it easier to stay connected wherever you are.
