AMD has teamed up with Sun Systems Pte. Ltd., Singapore's leading smart parking solutions provider, to introduce a groundbreaking AI-powered parking system. This innovation utilises AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC devices, revolutionising the accuracy and functionality of parking services.

Advanced AI enhances parking management

Sun Singapore has deployed an AI-enhanced system that significantly improves vehicle license plate recognition accuracy. This advanced technology also brings new capabilities, such as real-time detection of parking spot vacancies, traffic congestion, accidents, and parking infractions.

At the heart of this solution is the PlanetSpark EdgeAI Box X7, which runs on FPGA-based AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoCs. This project also saw input from Aupera Technologies, which was instrumental in designing and developing the FPGA firmware and AI vision solutions needed for accurate license plate reading. The use of FPGAs ensures these edge devices can enjoy a lengthy service life and the adaptability to keep pace with evolving AI technologies, algorithms, and standards.

System improvements and sustainability

Eddie Ng, Senior Sales Manager at Sun Singapore, lauded the AMD FPGA-based edge AI solution. “With our focus on durability, low latency and flexibility, the AMD FPGA-based edge AI solution, with its proven ability to support complex calculations on large amounts of data, was the right choice for us,” Ng stated. He also noted that the system's adaptability would allow for the roll-out of new to enhance car parking system features and services for their customers.

Ms. Phuay Li Ying, Managing Director of PlanetSpark, emphasized their commitment to driving eco-friendly innovation. “PlanetSpark is committed to driving sustainable innovation with our Green & Agile solutions, providing unmatched energy efficiency and performance at the edge,” she said. “We are delighted to work with AMD on this solution, which will bring significant improvements to the Smart Parking market.”

Overhauling outdated infrastructure

The technology that underpins most of Singapore's electronic parking systems is more than two decades old and lacks modern AI capabilities, which can add numerous functions and features. This new AI-enabled system is set to greatly enhance these existing systems, allowing the data generated through AI to offer advanced reporting tools to car park operators.

With this latest technology from AMD, achieving a 99% accuracy in license plate reading and introducing updated features for monitoring parking spots and enforcing parking rules, Sun Singapore is now poised to offer a complete solution for smart parking management. “Sun Singapore and PlanetSpark exemplify the power of AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC's ability to enable access to sensor fusion applications,” commented Chetan Khona, Senior Director of Industrial, Vision, Healthcare and Sciences Markets at AMD. “By processing data from a variety of inputs, customers can leverage AI to enhance processes we take for granted across a variety of applications, be it smart city, manufacturing, robotics, and beyond.”
