Acura unveils an aggressive new EV concept at Monterey Car Week

Discover the Acura Performance EV concept unveiled at Monterey Car Week, showcasing bold design and a glimpse into Acura’s electric future.

If you love electric vehicles (EVs) and bold designs, you’re in for a treat. Acura has just introduced its latest EV concept during Monterey Car Week, offering a glimpse into the future of the brand’s electric lineup. The Acura Performance EV concept, built on an all-new electric vehicle platform developed by Honda, Acura’s parent company, is set to make waves in the automotive world.

A glimpse of the future

This new concept is a crossover SUV with a distinctive design featuring a boat-like front end that immediately grabs your attention. If you recall the Precision EV concept from 2022, you’ll notice some similarities, but the Performance EV takes it a step further with a Sportback-style rear that gives it an even more athletic profile.

The Acura Performance EV concept isn’t just a design exercise; it’s a preview of a new electric model that Acura plans to bring into production next year. This production model will be built at Honda’s new “EV hub” in Ohio, which underscores Honda’s commitment to electrification and the future of sustainable motoring.

Honda’s global executive VP, Shinji Aoyama, shared some exciting news at today’s media event. He revealed that Acura is also working on a new “NSX-type” electric sports car, which is expected to hit the market around 2027 or 2028. This news adds to the anticipation surrounding Acura’s electric vehicle lineup, promising many exciting options for EV enthusiasts in the coming years.

Design highlights

When you first see the Acura Performance EV concept, its dynamic styling is hard to miss. Acura describes it as having a “powerful, athletic stance,” evident in its long wheelbase and pronounced wheel arches. The vehicle is fitted with 23-inch rims featuring spokes with variable spacing. These are not just for show; they’re designed to “evoke a sense of movement even while still,” adding a flair to the overall design.

The Performance EV concept has a sleek profile that might remind you of a Mustang Mach-E but with a more authentic sport hatch design that gives it a coupe-like appearance. However, it’s the front end that stands out. The aggressive hood and side vents, combined with the sharply designed headlights, give the Acura an “angry” look that sets it apart from other EVs.

Honda’s EV ambitions

While Acura’s new concept is making headlines, Honda is also making significant strides in the EV space. The company is working on a new series of electric vehicles under the Honda Zero name. This series includes intriguing concepts, such as a uniquely sloped EV and a larger “Space-Hub” concept. These designs suggest that Honda is exploring various possibilities for its future EV lineup, catering to different tastes and needs.

Acura’s Performance EV concept is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting era for the brand and its parent company. Acura is positioning itself as a critical player in the evolving electric vehicle market, focussing strongly on electrification, dynamic design, and performance.
